Yes! With this mag, I could get my entire genre output rejected by the same guy! I'm in.

Oh wow! As much as I'm in denial about my inclination to write horror, I'm pretty excited about this proposed project. Consider me a backer!

So, for those of you who subbed to Horror on the Installment Plan, how long did it take to hear back from them? Because I've been there for over a month, and my sub is still only "received."

Two anthologies that aren't paying heaps (10 pounds--though that's about $25 NZ--plus contrib copy), but look like fun:

The Alchemy Press Book of Ancient Wonders

The Alchemy Press Book of Pulp Heroes

I can't seem to send anything to them; anyone having luck sending to Mike Chinn, at Alchemy Press? It keeps bouncing back to me. I've tried both "[email protected]" and "[email protected]".

I really want to submit to the Pulp Heroes anthology. Anyone have any luck?

Damn.

It says they pay in US currency, by cheque.

That counts me out :(

No, not without them charging me more than the cheque is worth.

They do look like fun. I'd love to have a go at writing a ridiculous pulpy story. Alas, I know nothing about the genre. Could anybody here point me in the direction of some stories worth reading?

Erm... Any of you guys subbing to Scout and Engineer? I just read this on their site.

If we are to stand by the separation of church and state (and if we are to protectively seal our government from ideologies up to and as harmful as Islam, we must commit to the separation of church and state), our constitutional definition of "marriage" must only take into account the elements of that union that conceivably may require government intervention.

As harmful as Islam? Is Islam more harmful than any other religion? Suffice to say, I have withdrawn my submission and will not be subbing again. I should have guessed from the Ayn Rand quotes...

Ugh. That's not cool at all. I only ever had one story that I felt might be appropriate for them in the past (got a form R for it anyway) but now it looks like I'll stay away, too.

I'll thank you not to attack Ayn Rand though. I'm pretty sure she isn't on the S&E editorial board. That's a bit like blaming Karl Marx for every stupid or hateful thing ever said by anyone who claims to be a socialist.

Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged.
I read it twice, just to be sure it really was about trains.
Now I'm going to blame her for everything.

(the trains are a lie)

Ditto. And even if she came back from the dead, I doubt she'd be with a bunch of upstuck editors.

Atlas Shrugged is one of my favorite books and I consider my worldview to be libertarian (though not the Ron Paul kind). Feel free to throw rotten vegetables at me. :)

Aww, I like Ron Paul.

Personally, I preferred The Fountainhead--ignoring the fact that there's rape--more story, less preaching. And I laughed when Roark blew up the apartments. :D

Oh, if you like Ayn Rand, might be interested in this.

I'm not a big Ayn Rand fan, but I do love it when the hero spouts off for fifty pages and everyone has to listen to him because they're on a jury/he's barricaded himself in a radio booth/some other contrived reason. I always get a little jealous, like 'Ah, so that's what I need to do!'

Also, no Ayn Rand means no Bioshock, and I love Bioshock (I think it might even be what I'm playing in my avatar).

I like him as an individual and respect the courage of his convictions but can't agree with a lot of his platform (particularly the isolationism stuff).

I didn't enjoy "The Fountainhead" as much. In many ways it felt like the early draft of "Atlas Shrugged" -- same concepts and ideas, similar characters, but it felt like Rand hadn't quite found her voice in it yet.

Also, I didn't like Roark very much. IMO Dagney Taggart and co. make for much better protagonists.

I've never read "Atlas Shrugged" but liked "The Fountainhead" quite a bit when I read it in AP English *mumblty-mumble* years ago. I don't know if I'd like it as much these days, but am still glad I read it and "Anthem" back then.
