Well, I'm only starting out with the plotting thing, and I don't know yet what I'm going to and what I'm not. But, the things that you are pointing out, Tally, are really coming in handy. I don't want to get too carried away. :tongue

So, keep them coming, whenever I mention anything. :tongue

All right! I would suggest making your MC part of a thriving magical community, maybe even an entire fantasy world. Don't use wands, don't make the school a castle, don't give your MC a tragic history, great fame, and a magic scar. :tongue

... -.-

I have tried to think of a way for her to not have a tragic past, but nothing did work. I didn't know how she'd be connected to the bad guy, more than anyone else. I thought of them being related, but I remember thinking over it, and it didn't work (I thought of him being her uncle or something). And, it's not as dramatic.

And, Tally, there's such thing as NON VERBAL MAGIC. DUUUH ;)

And, no scar. Don't worry about it. ;)

Also, there will no Sirius-godfather person thingy, no traitor-friend, no Lupin as a werewolf, no friendly, half giant, no Porfessor Flitwick or Trewlaney, I will have someone like Cedric, except he'll be the MC's boyfriend and after he's killed, she'll be in a mental state for... A long time.

And I'm DYING to use the Snape/Lily relationship thingy, but I'm forcing myself not to. But I ADORE it... Hehe.

I think that's everything I was going to mention...

ETA: Those suggestions you said would do good for the fairy one, though, once you think about it...

Non-verbal and non-wanded is a must!

And the only way you could really pull off a tragic past would be if she'd had her memory erased and couldn't remember her childhood, and found out about it along the way.

Man, I was even sketching out the design of their wand too... :(

My dog is sick. I have to watch her. Hence, the random drawing for the first time in a long time.

I surely will, when it comes out in... Ten, twenty, maybe thirty years.

Staff? That makes me think of a shepherd.

No, like Merlin!

But seriously, they could use rings, bracelets, staffs, batons, earrings, globes, powder, whatever.

I was sort of close. A wand is basically a stick. Except... With magical powers...

Oh yes. Definitely. I could see them twirling their little batons before casting a spell. :tongue

Also, I'd suggest using more elemental magic, and if it's verbal, making the spells derived from Nordic words rather than latin.

Nordic? Elemental magic? Explain. Taylor is being a bit... Stoopid.

ETA: Hello, Ally. :tongue Don't be afraid to say what you think, here. You may want to read back to the last page. Your help would be appreciated. :)

As in, instead of the kind of magic in HP, magic using the elements, more natural, might be cool. Norse roots for spells= JK used latin words, I'd suggest Norse (which is like, old scandinavian). I could help you a bit with that, since I have some knowledge of Norse-y stuff.

Okie dokie. But, of course, dueling will be a part of it, as my MC will be captain of the club, so I will need "expelliarmus" and "stupefy" like spells. ;) But I like the idea of natural spells.

i have read a series, i started it when i was young say 12 and still read it to this day, its called Charlie Bone, you might want to look into it. I'm not one for magic stuff( I'm a scientific person by nature) but i really loved the authors system for it in this series!

Its kind of Harry Potter- ish, but much better in my opinion. Only certain endowed children how "powers" and they only have 1 power and well its just a really awesome series you should really look into.

Ally = my source for science homework questions. and this year i'm doing chemistry, and i'm an embarrassment at chemistry.

Duelling with the elements would be way cool, though. you could include light and dark as elements. and you could have telekinesy, so they could lift things with their minds, or throw pure force!

hmm... if your MC is captain of the club, you could do something cool, like, the old captain got kidnapped, and she ends up replacement but everyone hates her. and then she could be a total BAMF.

ETA: Ally, if you like that idea you should totally read my BFF's books when they come out. It's about a world where there are special children, currently called angels, who are born with supernatural strength, speed, and an extra power. There are two special schools for these children: but one is recruiting them for an army and another is dangerous experiments that kill half of them. And then there's a third race of children who pop up, with computer chips implanted in their brains with specific codes that could control or kill them without warning. Only problem is, no one knows who implanted the chips...

Your magic should be based off postmodernism, like Unknown Armies!

In Unknown Armies, magicians embrace paradox. For example, Plutomancers gain magical potency from this axiom: Money is power.

But the paradaox is thus: The real POWER of money comes from LOSING IT (spending it). So Plutomancers get incredible power over money and ownership if they have huge amounts of money, but if they SPEND the money, they lose it.

Epiduromancers gain control through destruction of the self. By hurting themselves, they're actually helping themselves.

In short: They cut off a thumb, then steal your face.

Or how about pornomancers!

They...well...

They're...fun.

(Basically, they gain power by doing sex activities in specific ways...but if they actually have sex just for the enjoyment OF sex, then they lose their power. It has to be for the edification of others.)

And Objectomancers gain power from this idiom: By doing everything for yourself, you make everyone's life better. They cannot do ANYTHING charitably, or else they lose their power...BUT alternatively, their powers tend to promote economic quality in the surrounding area...
