TALLY, I WANT TO BETA THAT ALREADY.

If I wasn't so crap at writing small and in a straight line, I would buy a bunch of post it notes for storyboarding.

Thanks!

Hmm... I have so many names in mind for this character.

Classic names like Samantha and Victoria and Miranda, then names like Piper and Sadie and Rowan...

Except my male cousin is named Rowan, so that doesn't work.

Nobody wants to join me in celebratory pool flipping? :(

Tally, it sounds right up my alley. I did just kind of finish a YA Mystery :D

I'm thinking hard.

It has to suit the culture of the city too, and her background and family. She's from the second richest neighborhood in Canada, goes to the most expensive school in that neighborhood, and has the kind of parents who will throw her a multi-million dollar bat mitzvah party to show off their wealth despite the fact that she is very vocal about NOT wanting one.

Are there names popular in Canada?

Also, is worldbuilding for urban fantasy that much different from other fantasy? *has never worldbuilt before*

The only reason I'm going to say "don't pick Victoria" is because Victoria is the name of my YA mystery solver. So yeah. :p

As for what's popular up here--our culture is pretty much defined by being inclusive of every other culture. 95% of the names we see are from the top 10 lists of every other country. In terms of English names, it's probably comparable to the UK and America. Lots of Mohammeds and Johns and Sarahs.

Because of the whole multiculturalism thing (remember that: it's our defining characteristic), any name'll do.

Worldbuilding is necessary for ANY genre! You've done it, probably, even if you don't realize it.

Oh, yes, but this neighborhood is... special.

Common names include Sidney and Danielle variants. And Arielle.

ETA: are you Canadian? I didn't know!

And Lisa, Canada is the second-largest country in the world. Each province is the size of England :p

England actually fits into Canada 40 times with room to spare.

Yes, I am Canadian. You may probe me for questions if you wish.

So you're not only writing a YA Mystery like I am, but you're setting it in a rich city in Canada like I am. We should talk. :D

I did not know Canada was that big.

You could drive from Edinburgh to London in the time it would take me to drive from Edmonton (middle of Alberta) to Calgary (slightly less middle of Alberta).

ETA: A fictional city called Fairfax that's a two hour drive north of Vancouver, British Columbia. It's based off of my hometown Fort Saskatchewan, with exaggerated traits of course.

Ah. I've never made it to BC.

Lisa, Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, which is a province in Canada. My mom's brother lives in Calgary, the other big city there. He owns a chocolate factory.

I LIVE IN AREA OF LONDON CALLED EDMONTON.

Tally: O.O

I blame the British. They were unoriginal with a lot of the names.

Also Canada has a lot of empty space. We're geographically almost as big as Russia, but Russia has way more shit going on.

That's kinda why we like immigrants. In fact, if you just look at the domestic population, our pop growth is negative. Socialist healthcare ftw. :D
