Well, if Darwinism is right, you'd expect that shurely?

I'm off to read the Good Book now, just in case Darwin was wrong.:D

I checked in the Good Book under diatoms and lo, it said unto me:

Prepare ye not the diatom save with thy kidney-sheath or, low I will smite thee in thy loins and count-up the short remaining seconds of thy miserable life with a flute made of thy thigh bones.

Thus saith the LORD thy GOD.

Just kidding. No. The part about the thigh-bone flute I made up, but in burning letters I read all the rest and I was sore afraid and I quickly wrote a psalm or two all in the most perfect simple heart-felt haiku:

I see Diatoms
burning in the sea
my tears mean nothing

Burning in the sea
I see diatoms
my tears mean nothing

my tears mean nothing
I see diatoms
burning in the sea

and so on --
