OK, people. Here's the deal. My wife is going out tonight, leaving me in charge of the cats, a fridge full of beer and my choice of whichever horrible film I want to watch. So place your votes and decide which one I go for. All votes have to be in by 6pm (GMT)...mainly because I'll be in the bath with a book by then.

Suspiria
Scanners
Last House On The Left
The Thing
Zombie Flesh Eaters

That's one for Kurt Russell's beard. No love for exploding heads or funky Italian 70s music?

I'm going out on a limb here - Last House will get the least votes. Although to be fair, it is an extremely nasty film.

Two for the beard. I may have to throw Escape From New York into the mix at this rate.

The Thing is still in the lead but Argento is coming up from behind. Last House, Scanners and Zombies are yet to make their move.

Is Zombie Flesh Eaters the one where the anthropologist lady strips off to go and make friends with the jungle tribe they run into? There are too many Italian zombie movies for me to remember exactly which is which :).

Edit: ah, no, I just checked IMDB and it looks like I'm thinking of Zombie Creeping Flesh.

Summary:

Suspiria - pretty but a bit dull by modern standards
Scanners - somewhat shocking for its time, not as much today
Last House On The Left - interesting characters and ending, but the first third is very bad
The Thing - most well-made movie on the list, hard to fault
Zombie Flesh Eaters - I'm sure I've seen it but don't remember it

Once you've heard the truth, everything else is ju
The original The Thing is the thing I would see. :D Great Howard Hawks direction, with his trademark "overlapping" dialogue. And it stars the 50's go-to guy for monster-busting, Kenneth Tobey!

Yup, me too. I remember getting up early on a Saturday morning when I was about five and flipping through the three available channels (this would be about 1963) until I came across The Thing. Scared the beejabbers out of me. I can handle it a little better now, and watch it whenever I come across it on TCM or whatever. In addition to the virtues mentioned, it's so well paced you don't miss the hour and a half you spend with it, which I can't say about most of the OP's list.

The Thing. Kurt Russell's response to his computer beating him at chess should be the deal maker.

I see you're planning a really wild night. I hope your wife doesn't find out.

That would be a possibility except I watched it just a few months ago.

Uh, you could forget the horror flicks and, you know, watch a movie with an adult rating. Just saying.

I hear Naughty Nurses of Norwich is pretty good.

Suspiria.

If the choice is between anything and Argento, then Argento is the correct choice. You can watch Deep Red or Trauma after that, or get Masters of Horror episodes "Jenifer" and "Pelts".

Goblin FTW! :)

probably watching DARK KNIGHT
Sorry I'm late.

I am a huge fan of Cronenberg, as well as Argento. Neither of those films I would recommend as their best. I love Deep Red, as well as the underrated Trauma, and for Cronenberg, I would recommend Videodrome, at least as far as his horror stuff goes.

I love both the original and the remake of Last House. I find both to be disturbing and heartbreaking in their own way.
