I've recently got the anime bug back after years of just poking at a series every now and then. I used to be an addict in high school, watching anime pretty much every free minute I had. Since then my priorities have changed and I don't have the time (or as much interest as) I used to. However, since I'm trying to write MG fantasy with heavy doses of anime flavor I figure it's about time to dive back in.

I'm looking to dive into some really long shonen battle series, since I figure those would line up most with the feel and age group I'm trying to write for. I've seen all the big ones... Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, One Piece, so now I'm trying to go off the beaten path and look for some others to try out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Right now I'm just looking through big lists of shounen anime trying to blindly pick some, but I'd rather take some on recommendation (especially if I'm spending 100+ episodes with these shows).

Welcome back.

This is perhaps the genre I'm least familiar with. I don't tend to watch long running shows, and I'm usually quitting early if I start. About the only show I've watched for 100+ episodes would be Hunter X Hunter, which was great fun and varied genres during its arcs, keeping things fresh.

One show I'd heartily recommend, even though it's only around 52 episodes long, is Kekkaishi, a story about the son of a family of exorcists family specialising in putting up barriers, who has extreme power but poor control, and who isn't really motivate to get better, because he'd rather be a patessier. It's pretty good.

The currently running Twin Star Exorcists seems to have a quite interesting story, but the anime looses steam quickly. There's a lot of pointless filler, and an extremely annoying mascot character which, I'm told, is anime only. The manga might be worth a look, but I'd cross the anime off your list.

The recently finished World Trigger I found fun until I dropped it (when they went anime original). So far there are 50+ episodes (60 - 70?). Whether there'll ever be more I don't know. Quality-wise it's not the best, and it takes a while to get going, but I found the characters to have a certain charm, so why not? Watch no more than one episode. If it clicks, stick with it, if not drop it. It does get better later on, but not enough to merit the investment if you don't like the early episodes.

Only 26 episodes so far and next to no chance for more, but I really love Mushibugyou. It's about an Edo magistrate set up to fight giant insects (with teeth?). Things get weird later. It's greatest strength is style, and a relentless optimism on the background of a fairly sinister setting. You'll have to be fine with some mild ecchi fanservice, though (not so mild if you include the OVAs).

I'm hearing good things about D-Grey Man, which is currently being either continued or rebooted (I don't know which), but I haven't watched it.

Another good 52 episoder is Soul Eater, which is very off-beat in its style, and contains multiple references to David Lynch's oeuvre (of all people) - I noticed Twin Peaks and Mullholland Drive. Basically, you have duos fighting, where one's the fighter and the other is the weapon (seriously). Highly recommended.

As I said, I'm not into the longer running shows, so I can't be of much help, beyond that. My prime recommendations are Kekkaishi and Soul Eater. Everything else is secondary.

Can someone identify this anime series for me? It was about three or four teen girls who were studying to be gondoliers for tourists on a planet called New Venice or something similar. The girls were all color and symbol coded in their uniforms. Not much happened in it, but it was very restful and sweet to watch. For the life of me I can't remember the name.

In your post you say you've seen DBZ, but have you seen Dragon Ball? If not, I highly recommend it. I myself prefer it over DBZ due it being more of an adventure show than a punchfest and I found it much funnier. Other than that, I'd suggest Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (not too long, fairly consistent quality-wise) and Fractale, which is very short but sweet.

Personally, I would say G Gundam is more shounen-y than Gundam Wing - more lighthearted and action-y, and there's the trope standard tournament too.

Seconding Kekkaishi, though I couldn't get into the anime for some reason - I read the manga instead.

Have you already seen Rave Master or Fairy Tail? Would recommend both. Yu Yu Hakusho is also an older good one if you haven't seen that yet.

Seconding Fairy Tail and YYH. :)

Also, you could try Gintama if you haven't. It's not for everyone, and the humor is regularly highly puerile and gross, but it also has some pretty fun characters, and when the stories buckle down into serious mode, it can get really engaging.

The series you are describing is Aria the Animation

Thank you. Now here's another one: A re-telling of "Moby Dick" in outer space. There was a character corresponding to Queequeg called "Barba" on the crew, also a monk-type guy with a huge headdress (who was actually shy around girls) and a Captain with a past. Periodically the crew would break out into a pop song called "Your love is like chocolate" or something. Any guesses?

Hakugei: Legend of Moby Dick.

And thanks for all the Shonen recommendations. I've started Kekkaishi and am enjoying it so far. Fairy Tail is also on my playlist and I'm also thinking of starting up Inazuma 11 because Level 5 makes good stuff (based on what I saw of Yokai Watch).

Well, 91 Days was amazing. My favorite of the Summer season. So, which anime are you guys looking forward to in the fall? For me it's:

Drifters: Warriors throughout history made to fight each other in a magical world. Could be a decent action series.

Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku: Another dark magical girl series with the battle royal idea of them fighting each other for survival. Could be interesting. It helps that it'll be done by Studio Lerche, who did Gakkou Gurashi.

Nanbaka: As a friend of mine put it, the trailer looks like Prison School crossed with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's one of those over the top comedies that can either be really good or bad. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWyuTZHm1E0

Occultic;Nine: Another series that takes place in the Steins;Gate world. Figured it's worth checking out.

Tiger Mask W: I'm a fan of wrestling so I'll definitely watch a series about pro-wrestling. As a side note the original manga was popular enough to spawn a real wrestler named Tiger Mask. There's actually been like four of them since the mask and name keep getting handed down.

TRICKSTER: Edogawa Rampo "Shounen Tantei-dan" yori: Mystery anime is very hit or miss. Can be great or incredibly dull. Worth checking out just because of that gamble.

For me, the top contender this season is Natsume Yuujinchou 5. It's a safe bet. Occultic;Nine looks interesting. In addition, I'm curious about:

Udon no Kuni: Guy quits job to take care of a... tanuki? Together they eat udon.

Fune wo Amu: A show about publishing a dictionary; how can I pass up on that?

Classicaloid: Trailer. If it's not too annoying... (Also, my white-hot hatred for Mozart music might turn me off it.)

Sangatsu no Lion: Because everyone says the manga is good, and because Shaft might make something good again that's not Monogatari.

They're doing more?!!

That gets my vote :)

Yes, and it starts this week. The last for seasons were on Crunchyroll (though not in my region, IIRC), so I expect it to show up there this season, too.

First impressions:

Trickster: Apparently this is a completely original series. However the opening death monologue and action scene felt like something out of a teen light novel, so I'm guessing that's the demographic they're shooting for. Especially considering the white haired, red eye'd teen main character who's upset that he can't die. As for the mystery, it seems like more of a hands on superhero vs supervillain, cat and mouse style mystery rather than someone picking through clues to solve a specific case. One of the big moments of the episode about halfway through seemed a bit contrived, with things going out of their way just so the show can demonstrate the abilities/curse of the white haired boy. The characters made okay first impressions but seemed a bit flat. All in all the first episode all in all wasn't bad, just painfully mediocre. Definitely seems like something I'll be dropping.

Magical Girl Raising Project (or Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku in japanese): You know those anime that use cuteness and happiness to lure you in and drop your guard and then bam, things get dark? Madoka and Gakkou Gurashi come to mind, but there's been plenty of others. Magical Girl Raising Project decided to do the exact opposite. The first fifty seconds are dark and bloody, and then we get the cute happy bits. So that way you're on edge when you see the cute girl happily accepting becoming a magical girl and being so thrilled to help others. You know already that smile isn't going to last. It's kinda interesting seeing an inverse of the trend. So far I like the designed of the girls while they're transformed, and the ending of the episode did a good job of setting up the main plot of the series. It also has a cute mascot that is obviously going to turn out to be evil or just amoral. This was a strong first episode and the series could turn out to be pretty good.

Tiger Mask W: Remake of a classic wrestling series/manga. Pretty fun in a cheesy action sort of way. Gives off a vibe similar G Gundam. Also, I like the older style character designs in honor of the manga (which debuted in 1968).

Didn't have a chance to watch anime except some more dubbed episodes of Servamp. I noticed there were a few scenes that were cut or may have been changed from the manga. I am interested to see where the anime goes from here. I am not sure if they're going to go out of order with these events or will have some changes in backstory for a few of the characters in the future.

Either way, my sister and I are enjoying the anime adaptation so far. :) Love the manga, so I am glad the anime is following pretty closely to it (so far).

I  Sleepy Ash the best (probably because I am the oldest sibling of my family, and probably because I can be kind of lazy or lethargic, too, lol).

I loved 91 Days and liked Mob Psycho 100 (made by the same guy that made One Punch Man). Cheer Danshi was decent too. If you're into slice if life and bromance it's worth checking out.
