Who was it looking for romance anime? If you have decent stupid-shounen-fighting-anime constitution, watch Sacred Seven, srsly. The plot is stupid, but Ruri is NOM NOM NOM, because she is voiced by Megumi Nakajima, and has been sending off serious wants to be fucked vibes all season to the MC. And this week, we even got a new Ranka Ruri insert song. HNNNNNNG. :D :D

Ok, I've seen an episode of Aoi Hana now.

The series I was watching was Maria-sama ga Miteru, though I couldn't say so because it was in the competition thread. I'm at season 3 now and I'd really like to see the live action movie, though it seems to be rare. It must be the least action-packed movie in existence.

I've also seen a few episodes of Strawberry Panic!

Ah, I've seen neither of these. Might check them out.

I finally decided to watch Madoka Magica because in another anime/manga website, they told me I should.

They're right. ;)

I'm currently watching Blood-C right now but they weren't that interesting. It did pick up though.

I'm sort of worried that the show's only good when people die. Makes it seem like suger-coated murder porn. The pace picked up, but it didn't manage to get more interesting.

I'm sort of disappointed. Clamp is better than that. The Bood-franchise is also better than that. What are they trying to do? Vampire Kobato?

I'm really liking Ao No Exorcist

That one's good fun. I started out wary, but grew into it. The characters are likable, and that basically makes the show for me.

and I'm also watching Uta No Prince Sama because my sister thought the opening was amusing.

That's one of the shows I don't watch. How is it?

Usagi Drop is cute and I like it.

My favourite this season. :)

I read more manga than I watch anime though.[/QUOTE]

Princess Mononoke.

How do you say it?

I've always said it, "Mah-nah-no-kay."
But I've heard others say it as "Moe-no-no-key."

ETA: We need an anime channel on basic cable here in the U.S.
Closest we've got is Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. (Toonami, oh Toonami, oh wherefore art though Toonami?!)

But I've heard others say it as "Moe-no-no-key."

The hiragana in the title is もののけ, for which the romaji is just mo-no-no-ke, where o is just "o" in IPA like... ahh, it's hard to think of an English example that isn't "ou" in IPA. I guess the name "Moe," yeah. So "no" is correct for both middle syllables, and the "mo" should have the same inflection in the vowel as the "no." And it's "ke," which in IPA is just, well, "ke." The "kay" in your first example would be "kei," so more like "keh" if that makes sense. Rendered in IPA, it's literally just "mononoke." Japanese pronunciation is pretty simple that way.

Surely one could have heard this from the dialogue?

It wouldn't have been the first time I've heard an English voice actor pronounce a Japanese word strangely/incorrectly.

Sometimes it seems like the differences that can be created while translating the Japanese language are pretty varied. Not just spelling, but also pronunciation. I don't think it was until early 2011 that Sui-Feng from Bleach finally had an official translation of her name assigned. Although I think Soifon is still somehow okay. They both look and sound different AFAIK, and there were still other variations, like Soi-Fon, although I believe that's pronounced pretty similar to above.

Switch it to the Japanese track?

Almost all of those cases are non-Japanese words rendered in Japanese in anime. Neither of those names are Japanese. Similarly, there's Holo/Horo from Spice and Wolf and Alice/Arisu from Lain. For the former, it doesn't really make a difference, since the English "l" and "r" are approximations for the retroflex flap, which has no English equivalent, and the latter was naturally pronounced "Arisu," but was intended (and is officially) the English name "Alice."

I can't read Kanji or Hiragana, but if you know the sounds, anything in romaji is a breeze compared to how unpredictable and messed up English spellings-to-proncunciations are. I do sometimes get the emphases wrong, though.

Dear Brain's Base,

After six episodes of aimless plot wandering and shitty pacing, because of this week's episode of Kamisama Dolls, all is forgiven.

Don't screw it up, now.

After reading some reviews, I don't think I'll watch this one.

(Might examine Kamisama Dolls sooner or later though.)

@these last few episodes of Tiger & Bunny.

That is all. If you weren't watching this already, it's worth checking out.

Man, anime really makes me wish we had cultural festivals in high school here. I feel like I've missed out on so much. Dammit, I want to have gone to my classmates' maid cafe! I want to have had a massive awesome bonfire thing! Gahhh.

Hmm, curious I've never noticed this thread before. For my part I enjoy a variety of anime (Cowboy Bebop (pretty much has the best ost of any series out there), Paranoia Agent, Welcome to the N.H.K and Shinryaku! Ika Musume being among my favourites). Watching Ergo Proxy at the moment and enjoying it. Any Satoshi Kon or Shinichiro Watanabe fans here?

Naturally. Though I still need to work my way through most of the rest of their catalog.

For some strange reason I never got into Cowboy Bebop. It's a series I should be loving. Hm...

I do love Samurai Champloo.

Paranoia Agent

Along with many others of Kon's works, it's on my list. Not yet seen.

Welcome to the N.H.K

Ooh, a great one. I think I might have recommended it in this thread, but I can't really remember.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume

'twas fun. It's very popular, and I just don't see why it stands out. Not that I begrudge the series it's success. It's solid comedy.

Watching Ergo Proxy at the moment and enjoying it.

Ergo Proxy played the whole roster from brilliant and beautiful to dull and tedious. Luckily, most of it was good.

You sir, have fun times ahead of you.

I've met a fair few people who didn't like it which is odd, because I've always viewed it as an excellent way to ease people into anime. That or The Big O.

I do love Samurai Champloo.

Samurai Champloo is excellent, though I'll always prefer Bebop simply because it was the series that really drew me into anime and led to my continuing obsession with the medium (as well as jazz). SC also had an awesome OST. Watanabe has a real ear for music.

Along with many others of Kon's works, it's on my list. Not yet seen.

Ah, well I can definitely recommend it. The entire series is a real melting pot of all his ideas - quite a few references to Paprika in particular.

Ooh, a great one. I think I might have recommended it in this thread, but I can't really remember.

I really loved N.H.K but man was I depressed when I finished it. It was almost as bad as NGE in that regard.

You've got to be squidding me. :D

I'm not really into the more light-hearted shows (prefer my anime to be grimdark) so your guess is as good as mine but it seems like the whole "moe" thing has really gained momentum lately.

Yeah, I'm finding that to be the case. Seems to be very uneven at times - a lot of ponderous philosophising monologues that don't say nearly as much as the story does, interspersed with fast paced action and some really effective character moments. Pino's easily my favourite character. Cannot. Resist. The. Cute.

My most-listened to soundtrack remains Macross Frontier's vocal collection. Kalafina's Seventh Heaven, i.e. the pop part of the OST for Kara no Kyoukai is probably second. Not counting singles like "Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari" from Bakemonogatari or "Beautiful World" from Rebuild of Evangelion. I ended up getting a few Utada Hikaru albums thanks to the latter.

You sir, have fun times ahead of you.

Well, the only thing I really mean to see of Watanabe's that I haven't is Macross Plus. As for Kon, I love Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue, but lately I've been having trouble finding the time for a whole movie.

Well, I finished Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The verdict: should have watched it sooner. :p

Uta No Prince Sama is interesting. The first episode's kind of weird to watch because the main character has (as you can see) these really weird yellow eyes. Also, in the beginning, it was hard to watch because I was really concentrating on the comments people put on niconico since you're able to see them when watching the show.

Watching NHK was pretty unpleasant for most of the time. I don't think I ever cringed so much before. It's not what you want to watch for relaxation.

Oh, I do like lighthearted anime a lot. Among my favourites: Azumanga Daioh, School Rumble, Ichigo Marshmellow, Minami Ke, and last season's A Channel.

Humour is just so subjective, though. Btw, Shinryaku! Ika Musume gets a second season in fall, called Shinryaku!? Ika Musume.

(So does Working, which I personally preferred.)

ETA: I'm surprisingly fond of this season's Nekogami Yaoyorozu.

Pino's easily my favourite character. Cannot. Resist. The. Cute.

Maybe I'll watch it then, some time.

You probably shouldn't watch Texhnolyze, then.

While I like lighthearted anime, too, most of the shows and movies I really, really love are thoroughly dark. As I'm sure you all know, I think End of Evangelion is the best movie of all time.

No no no no. I should. (Probably. It's been on my list for some time now.) And: I did like NHK a lot. But it's not something I'd want to watch in my bleakest of moods. (Although the black humour works quite well, disarming some of it without disrespecting the subject. Depends on the episode, I'd say.)

I'm very mood-dependant in what I want to watch. (And it's not as simple as not wanting to watch depressing stuff when I'm down, as sometimes that can have cathartic effects. And sometimes not. I'm not very consistent, and I can't always predict myself, either, so sometimes I quit midepisode to come back later. Also happens with light-hearted stuff.)

If things become too "dark", they tend to bore me, rather than bringing me down. (Happened to Gantz, for example. It's not a bad show, but my motivation to watch is low, since it seems... overly dramatic somehow. I can't relate, and sooner or later I lose interest via boredom.)

I think I'm getting tired of the age-old "showing either a collage or a series of character's faces accompanied by a 'dramatic' sound for each one in Bleach, and other anime as well."
Seriously, why is that technique popular?
