There's a book called Everyday Life in the 1800s. It has a short excerpt on things such as funiture, clothing, transporation, but more importantly it lists the modern slang of the day.

Things like "going full chisel" aka really fast or how a certain lady had "set her cap" for a certain gentleman. It also lists when the sayings were first adopted/printed so you could probably find heaps of stuff used in the late 1800s.
