I have an MC whos a free spirit and and a flirt - there's probably lots of corny, but I hope it works.
Right. Except for the part where the obvious seems ridiculous or cliched to me. Thus, my problem.Then I would just go for the obvious.
My guy MC is 18 by about a week. He's a recluse, and he's got his first girlfriend ever.
So, whatever a 17-18 year old guy would do/say - goes. No matter how corny. If it's true to the character, then it is not corny!

Mine's pretty corny for the first half. Purposefully so, because the guy starts out living only to love the girl. (He's 17 (but not really) and an android built to love her). Then right where I am now, I'm hoping for a more normal, healthy relationship to be developing. *crosses fingers*
My problem is I never know how much is too much to put in a YA story, so I try to elude an/or keep it PG-13 if it were a movie.

I made these boys totally non-sexual. On purpose. So I wouldn't have to deal with it.

Yeah it's literal, in that the families are enemies - and the guy MC really is poisonous/lethal to the girl MC he loves.

My romance is usually awkward, clumsy or out-right farce. Nothing really goes right. Yeah, and I write nerd-romance, a lot of it in my pages. It gives me an excuse for not getting it right or splashing cliche ink.
