Oh, I see! A bit of diversion to keep the eyes of the law from the desired but illegal substance, eh?

Or did you mean that's where the Bailey's is?

:D

Searching for a masterpiece...
Well, it took me a while to get back here. I've been stalking the SYW forum like a crazy person. I *think* I'm starting to navigate pretty well, but aside from that, I'm still feeling quite inferior to every other member of this site. So I must be doing something right! :)
:hooray:

I have spent the last hour trying to figure out what filtering is...

Fun times! :partyguy:

Hey, Miranda, I feel about the same, frankly. And I was wondering about filtering myself. I gathered it is a term for some kind of indirection in narrative but - heck, lemme google it up here and see if that gives me any joy.

meanwhile, what's everybody drinking this evening?

RIGHT??? That's why I was freaking out. It must be an obvious thing, because EVERYONE over there notices it, and I'm ready to start my second draft and I want to be aware of these blaring mistakes... but what if they aren't blaring to me??? Thanks for the link!

And, have a drink. :Coffee: Of something. Take a load off.

After all, you've caught it in time to avoid making more work for yourself so, good job there! By the way, I googled "filtering in writing" and there was a whole page of decent stuff, that was just the first one up. Sometimes forums posts aren't the very clearest form of explanation when it's a new concept, I find.

The silver lining is clear. I'm in a good spot to learn to notice filtering since I'm just getting ready to start the second draft. Now, to clearly learn the correct use of a comma. Apparently I've got those all wrong also. I use them way too much!

Hey, Miranda, I feel about the same, frankly. And I was wondering about filtering myself.
If it makes you feel any better, I had issues with recognizing filtering. I look at some of my older stories, and I pretty much go: :gaah

I think a lot of writers go through this process, and that's what makes AW such a great place. We're all here to learn and help each other out. :)

Now, to clearly learn the correct use of a comma.
 There have been wars over the definition of the "correct" usage of the comma. ;)

If you need another drink, let me know.

*goes off to restock the Baileys*

Filtering is one of those things which are easy to do and feels normal, but can be tricky to realise you're doing it in your own writing. Mistakes can be easy to spot in other people's stuff, but difficult in your own. That is why this place is great. It allows you the chance to learn from other writers who have gone through exactly what you are going through. And all writers will have done the filtering in their own stories at some point, so don't hit yourself too hard about doing it.

Oh, drinks all round. :e2drunk:

On a side note, I would just like to state that reading thorough the SYW forum has taken my confidence as a writer from about a 6 to (let's just throw a number out there) .00065. Every critique made me question if I had done that in my book. AAAAA! Pass the baileys, not the shot, I need a whole damn bottle! :)

advice take all critique with a grain of salt. if you have 5 people all tell you the same thing look at it more than just having 1 person jump up and down.

we all make mistakes and having people who will show you the errors in your writing will only make you stronger. and when you "fix" the issues you will have a document that you are really proud of.

s

I was wondering about filtering

think of it like a language filter in some games.

in stead of getting she is such a bitch
you get this she is such a *****

hmm wonders how many actual thoughts would exist if that type of filter was really in place...

conversations would be very different.

word of the day
jackanapes \ JAK-uh-neyps \ , noun;
1. An impertinent, presumptuous person, especially a young man; whippersnapper.

2. An impudent, mischievous child.

3. Archaic . An ape or monkey.

now how to use this in 5 conversations today

*Strolls in looks at his watch* Huh, its five somewhere. *shrugs* Barkeep! Irish Jail Bird! Heavy on the Bailey's!
*Cop walks in and heads directly for TreeJet*
Cop: You seen him?
Tree: Nice to see you too Jimmy. No, I haven't.
Cop: You see him you call me.
Tree: What'd he do this time?
Cop: That's the thing. He's gone.
Tree: Really? I was wondering why it was so quiet. *downs the Jail Bird*
Cop: Call me if he comes in. *Cop walks out the front door*

Damn! You guys will give me an alibi right? I'm too pretty to go to prison!

"Roger Rabbit"! Nostalgia! Hard! Miranda did she tell you anything? I'd like to get back in good graces with her. She always over reacts to tough situations. I still love her though. Plus there's always a paternity test.
