I forgot to mention Richelle Mead. I love her Georgina Kincaid (Succubus) series.

Ooh! Mine! Read mine!

/end shameless self promotion
Having just finished A Devil in the Details last night, I'm adding it to my rec's too--good stuff! Especially if you're like me and would like to see an MC with a healthy, stable homelife and relationship with his/her love interest for a change.

Kelley Armstrong has a YA urban fantasy out called Darkest Powers. The first book is The Summoning.

Just finished Marta Acosta's HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA. Hilarious, suggest it if you haven't picked it up already!

The first several Anita Blake books (before they became porn) by Laurell K. Hamilton are quite good.

If you want something funny, I can't possibly recommend Christopher Moore's The Stupidest Angel enough. It's fantastic.

I agree with you about LKH, I read until book 10 and then stopped.

Another vote here for Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels books. One of my favorite series.

I said I would follow up on this thread. I have read a few:

The Good Fairies of New York, Martin Millar

ordered from Amazon! Really looking for ward to it.

Mike Carey's Felix Castor series

Read book I, have book II in tbr. Loved the first one! We need male heroes like this one. Urban fantasy is too light on the mens in my opinion.

Elizabeth Bear Blood and Iron and Whiskey and Water.

My lib'ary didn't have either of these books, but I did get Elizabeth Bear's All the Windwracked Stars and was blown away. This is the kind of fantasy I like. Gritty and magical at the same time! I have to admit... I didn't understand some of it... but something about the writing just sort of gripped me... probably hypnotised me more than anything. I've got Blood and Iron on my kindle, now. It will be the next "modern" book I read (I go back and forth: fantasy/classice/fantasy/classic) I don't know if 1 book is enough to say "this is one of my favorite authors" but she made a big impression on me.

Seanan McGuire's October Daye series, starting with Rosemary and Rue. Her MC is a half-fae knight who works at a Safeway in San Francisco.

In luv! luv luv luv the Rosemary and Rue. Going to get the second book as soon as I can. Ironically, I actually have to change a thing or two in my own current wip because the similarities are too startling. But my fae are way ditzy, so that's all good....

Right now I'm reading the Hunger Games

You too, huh?

You say that like it's an unusual thing, Jess. ;) Hehehe.

Many great recommendations in here. My favorites include Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance, Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, and Ilona Andrews.

I want to second Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson books (haven't read her Alpha and Omega series yet), Karen Marie Moning's Fever series and Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series.

Also wanted to add Vicki Pettersson's Zodiac series.

I recently read and enjoyed The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney. It's a first novel, YA urban fantasy.

LOL, I forgot to come check this thread for replies! :e2smack:

Yeah, I read more than enough to keep me away from the rest of LKH's books. Especially after all the talk of tentacles and whatnot over here. *gigglesnort*

I have to recommend Caitlin Kittredge's Black London series. Her Nocturne City series didn't really spark my interest, but the Black London books are great.

MLN Hanover's Black Sun's Daughter Series is AWESOME.
Also, Rachel Caine's Weather Warden and Outcast Season series.

Also loved Chloe Neil's Chicagoland Vampires and
Lilith Saintcrow's Jill Kismet and Dante Valentine series.

Plus, I can second Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson and Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels as two of my favorites.

I just bought the first two books in KMM's fever series online today. It seems to get great reviews, and I'm looking forward to reading her interpretation of Ireland and in particular, Dublin - where I'm from.

Emma Bull's War for the Oaks if you haven't read it. Pamela Dean's Tam Lin. (I know these are old, but amazing).

Elizabeth Bear Blood and Iron and Whiskey and Water.

I have finally read Blood and Iron! It was amazing. Bear is hard though. You have to have a grasp of the mythology she bases her story in. IE: If I hadn't read The Mists of Avalon and The Once and Future King (Arthurian legends) I think I'd have been a little lost. I wish I had read Tam Lin already, but I'll put it on the list as well... and probably go back and read Blood and Iron again. I've put the Whiskey and Water on my wishlist...

I'd second the Christopher Moore rec.

I like Charles De Lint's stuff, especially his stories and novels based in Newford. It's a nice departure from the usual kick-ass heroine-based UF. Many of his characters are artists and writers and his stories are often based in Native American mythology.
