My 10K word story "Otaku" just got accepted for their Romance On The Go line. Fast response. Fast contract and it's scheduled to be released in September :D I'm thrilled!

Excellent news. Keep us posted on what it's like working with them and if they pay on time.

Congrats to everyone with recent contracts.

I got an email from Evernight earlier this week with an offer. The contract's still be drawn, but I can't wait to work with them.

Congrats, Erin

I've got a short MM coming from their Romance on the Go line sometime in the upcoming weeks and I'm working on another one to submit there. So far they've been lovely, but I've not yet seen any sales figures.

Congrats to the recent acceptances! I'm wondering -- what kind of editing are you guys getting on your titles? I saw on the submissions page that they want works to be "thoroughly edited" before submission; are they doing any substantial tweaking after acceptance or is it more a copyedit/proofread only sort of experience?

I was edited. I went through two rounds of it with my antho story released in August and I've already been through one for the Romance on the Go story. From comments I've seen of other authors there, they had decent editing. I've been edited more at other houses and less at others, so YMMV.

I think it just means don't expect to submit sloppy work and expect us to fix it kind of thing. Pretty much what any reputable publisher would expect.

I haven't gotten edits yet as I'm a newborn with them, but I'd expect at least 1-2 rounds of edits. My other publisher does about 2-3 rounds depending on how much ground we have to cover.

I've published several books with them (I absolutely love working with them), and in my opinion the editing is very much on the light side. My last edit was to convert all my dash-dashes to an em dash and add a couple of missing commas, maybe a homonym typo. That's it! Ain't no way in hell I'm that thorough. I know I'm not though the editor's notes raved about how clean my MS was. **scratches head** I've found typos post release in my books, mostly stuff caused by track changes obscuring stuff like missing spaces or commas instead of periods, that sort of thing. Nothing major though, at least not for me.

As to royalties, never had a lick of a problem over the past year. The supporting data and $$ is distributed very quickly after each quarter end and is easy to follow and understand.

Response time is lightning fast. They've also just hired a marketing manager so we're hoping for a little more structure post-release to help with sales. I was pleased that they advertised my books a couple of times on the web.

Now something new they are undertaking that REALLY has me curious is "Evernight Teen", the new line they are launching January 2013. There will be a different website for it, but beyond that, we haven't heard too much. They are taking submissions already. They want older, darker teen (upper YA / new adult) material, not surprisingly.

Two rounds of edits has been the norm for me. I've given up on sending in anything for the anthologies because the last two times I've gotten a rejection with them hinting they want me to expand and submit as a stand alone. It seems I've lost the art of the short.

Payment has always been on time. I'm thinking they do it alphabetically so hurray for me marrying someone near the beginning! My sales, IMO, are great and I can't wait to see what my latest release bring in. Of course, 3rd party sales are always a quarter behind... bummer. I'm thinking that I'll be able to pay my property taxes on time. :)

I'm about to sign my first ever publishing contract and will be one of the launching titles for the new Teen line. I have so many questions, but one thing I really want to know before signing is how taxes are handled. Are royalties considered a capital gain? Will I be provided a 1099? If any other US citizen working with Evernight could give me a brief run-down on how this works, I would really appreciate it!

Preacher's Wife, Congrats!!!! Royalties aren't considered a capital gain, they're income and you will be expected to pay income tax on any money you make from your book when you file your taxes. You should be provided a 1099, just double check your contract or with your editor to make sure. IANAL, but if you make a ton of money, you'll probably need to file quarterly taxes. However, please consult a tax specialist/attorney if it comes to that (and I hope it does! :D) Best of luck!

To my knowledge--and I'm no legal expert--only business entities need to file quarterly taxes. I've made in the neighborhood of 25k in a year on royalties and didn't need to file anything by the quarter. (That's for Colorado, it -may- be different in other states.)

@Preacher's Wife: All US based publishers are required by the IRS to send 1099s to you for any royalties over $10. (This I -am- certain of since I've been required to do this since 2008, when my company opened it's doors.)

Just sayin'

Yeah, that sounds right to me, too. When I was working as a contractor and all my income was being reported on a 1099, I got some paperwork that *encouraged* me to file quarterly, but it was entirely optional; the idea was that if I sent in estimated payments every quarter it would keep me from having a big tax bill at the end of the year.

Thanks everyone! I emailed Stacey and got the scoop. Since they are a Canadian company, they only send tax documents to Canadian authors. I'll be considered a contract employee (U.S. based), so the only thing I have from them will be my royalty statements. (I'll contact a tax specialist to find out what to do since I won't get a 1099.)

Anybody else around here submitting to the teen line? FYI--as AA said, it will have a separate website. The adult site will have a link to the teen site, since there will be crossover readers, but the teen site will NOT have a link to the adult site.

Just be aware that if you don't pay estimated taxes, you might be subject to a penalty at the end of the year if you're not having taxes withheld from another job, especially if you wait until April 15 and don't file Q4 estimated taxes.

Is Evernight Teen eBook only, or will they be publishing print books as well? I may submit to them myself, but I'm a big fan of having a print copy of my book as well, so if it's eBook only, I probably won't bother.

Thanks for the info, Preacher's Wife - that definitely helps. I'm going to tweak something a bit more and then submit to them.

Has Evernight Teen gotten promotion/marketing venues set up for their books? I've noticed that some--certainly not all, but some--romance publishers who decide it would be fun to delve into YA/New Adult have no concept of how/where to promote the YA/New Adult stuff other than the venues they're using for romance. (Which might get them some adult readers who enjoy YA, but isn't likely to net them any teenage readers...)

*Bump*

Hi All, I'm giving this thread a quick bump and nudge. I just got an offer email from this pub today, and it was a crazy quick turn around from submission to offer. Any new news about Evernight? Any hiccups and such?

Laurel, I've got two novellas with them, Otaku and Obake. They pay royalties on time and let me have input in my covers.
