Large avatars

How is it that some people seem to have avatars much bigger than the 80x80 pixel or 17k limit this site imposes? I mean, some people's avatars are quite large (an inch or two) and one was a file that was 25k.

You can have a larger avatar cater 50 posts or if you donate to the site or if you post something that MacAllister feelsvwarrants a special avatar. This of course means she picks the avatar . . .
