It's hard to find info (in English, anyway) about the coup in Turkey, but it appears that the democratically elected Islamic-leaning government has arrested a number of generals and admirals who they claim planned to force a coup by blowing up mosques.

But remember, in Turkey, it's the military who is the guardians of the secular and western-leaning ideals.

As in many places, the urban areas are liberal (in this case, secular) and the rural areas are conservative (in this case, religious Islamic.) When I visited, about a dozen years ago, the people we talked to were strongly and proudly secular, with a strong regard for a separation of mosque and state.

Corruption and economic problems brought an Islamic party to power and that's the group who is now trying to hold power with this move, at least according to people I know.

Here is something from a Turkish friend of mine who thinks that the current government is consolidating it's power with this move:

Well, they are making a coup, using the law. They [the current government] are the bad guys and the good guy was always the army here, like a big brother you ran to when you got in trouble. the ex-navy commander (one of the arrested) is a good friend of the family... the outcome ?? The country is going down the drain. Literally. Can't belive history is repeating itself & I can't do anything...

The shit is hitting the fan... think 1933 Berlin when Hitler took power, he used the law to "clean" everyone against him...

Yes, we are but on the surface life goes on as usual.
