Someone is advertising on another forum I frequent as "International Book Publisher seeks New Authors". Since they're hitting other writers' boards, I figure they'll be here soon enough, so I'll anticipate them and get the thread started in advance. (They're not listed in the BBC index.)

They provide an email address ([email protected]) but no publisher name or website. I am presuming they are the e-publisher whose website is www.delta555.com, which states that the new press proposes to charge authors £2,500.00 up front and to set the cover price of the e-books at £25.00.

Yup, that was the jawdropper for me, too. (Even worse when you translate it to my currency -- NZ$75! For an e-book! That's unedited! My WTF-o-meter hit the red.)

The jaw dropper for me is that they take 100% of the first 2,500 pounds earned per title. i.e. no authors are going to get paid at all.

But who wouldn't be wooed by this gramticaspasmatica we/our fest:

If we were to take all and every submission we were offered we would lose out, and go out of business very quickly. By carefully selecting works for publication we can guard our own long term profitability and ensure that our Authors gets due recompense for their efforts. This method of operation requires a close collaboration between us and our Authors and we seek to personally interview every proposed new author after we feel sure his work will be a commercial success.

If "guarding your long-term profitability" by charging $50 (US) a pop were a workable business model, other publishers would already be doing it.

These guys are going nowhere.

If I read their page right (and it is confusing), they're saying that the author keeps all the money until he/she has made back the twenty-five hundred quid.

Not that that is ever going to happen either.

Put this down as a Very Bad Idea.
