Not even that, it's vanity: They own the ISBN, etc.

And if you want actual editing...

Is 5-20 hours of editing time enough time to fully edit my book?

No it is not. The 5-20 hours stipulated by our publishing plans are just another opportunity for another set of eyes to read through your manuscript and correct mistakes when they are found. The amount of editing time provided by our publishing plans is not intended for a comprehensive edit to catch all mistakes. Please understand that a good edit takes around 10 full working days by a professional editor. The costs of a good professional editor on an average size book usually costs upwards of a thousand dollars. If presenting a professionally edited book is your goal, then please contact us here and we can recommend several third party editors to help refine your book.

The problem with these publishers is that you pay a substantial up front fee for the privilege of them taking most of the profits if your book actually sells.

If there is no up front fee then fine, but it is a bit much to expect the author to take all the risk with the initial costs and then for them to take a cut on all future sales.

If the publishing is through lightening source (as it probably is) the process after title set up is completely automated, the only cost is £8 a year to keep the title in the catalogue so they are really getting cash for doing nothing.
