Many people have already listed my nominations already (John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Steve Gadd, and Phil Collins are my favorites). Any love for Kenny Aronoff or Jeff Porcaro, session drummers extraordinaire?

No love for Ringo Starr?

Charlie Watts as well.
For best rock drummer? Not to take anything away from their contributions to their respective groups, but as players, while competent they're not exceptional. Jes' my opinion, of course.

Hey Eyeblink, Ringo will always be FAB!

QFT. The greatest band in the history of rock & roll needed Ringo. His exquisite sense of time kept the others aligned and provided a measure of control to the emotive excesses of his bandmates. I can't think of another drummer that could have given them the cohesion they needed to be the greatest band ever. Keith Moon was a better drummer, technically (and pyrotechnically), but the band would have fragmented much earlier with him behind the drums instead of Ringo.

Hm, I'm not an expert on drums by any means, but if you want people who used the drums as instrument rather than a "mere" timekeeper (no mean function that, either), may I nominate Twink (Pink Fairies, Pretty Things).

Nice to see my own fave, Lord Drum Phil of Collins, getting such support.

But a few names missing surely. Howzabout:

Rick Buckler
Topper Headon
John Bradbury
Jon Hiseman

My own personal take is that it's not all about technique; a good drummer adds to the song. So Ringo's definitely in the running. Listen to Penny Lane. No bass drum. Listen to Lady Madonna. He's playing two parts, i.e building the song up. A bit like Jimmy Page bashing out a few chords to solo over the top of. And then there's the crazy pattern on It's Getting Better.

The same goes for Charlie Watts. Where the hell does that first beat on Start Me Up come from? And that's before imagining the effort behind making sure that Keef and Ron sound in time!

So. I think we're all agreed. The best rock drummer is Phil Collins.:D

All great drummers for their time and styles, but none of them could beat the man who is considered the originator of the drum solo...

Gene Krupa. Because of him, drums came out from behind the band. He could make drums talk and people would stop and listen. He has numerous albums of nothing but Drum solo's and they have won many awards...

Phil Collins, Manu Katche, and Ged Lynch.

But I'm a Peter Gabriel fan, so I might be biased toward drummers who've worked with him.

I've just got back into Buddy, absolutely brilliant. Not what I'd call a rock drummer though. And the same for Gene Krupa, who was the coolest chap to ever play a solo on a matchbox!

If it's a jazz influence we're after, John Bonham pinched a few things from Elvin Jones.

If it's jazz rock - what about Billy Cobham? By golly that lad can thump the tubs!

For me it's a tie between Jimmy Chamberlin and Danny Carey, but there IS this awesome drummer from my city who always blew my mind when I saw him play.
