I am willing to be a beta reader.

My Fav genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, (especially YA Fantasy) Sci-Fi, Speculative, Sometimes Horror. Cross genre stuff is cool too.

I am a journalism honours student, so anything with a journalist in it, send it to me, I'm more than willing to give comments on how you can make the press more realistic.

I prefer stuff to be polished, but I can help you develop something if you're stuck.

PM if interested!

Hi.

I'm willing to beta read. And I give comments that I notice. I just point out what I like and I don't like as a reader. And I'll give comments on things that aren't as good as I think being a writer. I like fantasy mostly. If it's hard core sci-fi. Show me an info or summary, so I know what i'll be expecting. If it's romance or erotica, a summary would be good to. Mostly, I'm up to anything. I'm a bit direct on feedback. I also take notice of grammar and punctuation. So if you can take a little bit of constructive criticism and the occasional "I think this one's lacking, You can make it better, this isn't good enough, maybe a rewrite" comments. Then by all means send it my way. :)

Status: Closed from beta-reading until further notice

I'm willing to read surrealism, slipstream and science fiction but a bit iffy on space opera. And by iffy, I mean start me off with a summary and then wie'll consider if it will be okay to send me a page or two, then we'll consider if you will send the whole thing/by section or however you prefer it be done.

PM me if interested.

Okay I’m throwing my hat in the ring. I’ll beta for someone if they like. But right now, I am pretty particular on what I want to read.

For now, I only want to beta young adult or middle grade urban fantasy. No high fantasy – if your book has dragons or takes place on the planet Grobernok, I’m not the right guy for you. I like paranormal, magic, adventure…etc. my favorite YA books are Harry Potter, Artemis fowl, Golden Compass, Fablehaven, almost anything by Kenneth Oppel…there are others but that gives you an idea.

I’d prefer if you sent me a PM with a brief description of the work, as well as the word count. Also, I prefer to read the work after you have gotten it to the best shape that you can.

Cheers.

I'm available to Beta, enjoy reading everything and am willing to read anything as long as you've done your polishing. I do not want to read 80K words of telling.

I'm completely honest in my reviews and won't be afraid to tell you what does and doesn't work (for me). PM me if interested.

I'm willing to beta -- here are my specifics:

  • Prefer literary, mainstream, contemporary and/or women's fiction
  • No gratuitous sex, violence or child abuse
  • I'm OK with adult language but not pervasive and for no apparent reason
  • Prefer work that's in a final or close to final draft

I'll give my opinion on the overall work instead of line by line or being the grammar police. You can PM me if you'd like to start out with just the first 1-3 chapters. You can also PM me for my credentials, where I write, etc.

ETA: 2/1/2010 - No time to beta read right now. Will update if it changes.

Heya, I have a little free time and would quite like to beta in between revision for the next few weeks :D I'll repost what I posted before and I'll edit again when I can't do any more!

I'm interested in beta-ing. I'm 17, and in school, so please be aware that I may have to keep you waiting a little if homework/essays/revision go manic! I'm interested in Contemporary YA or Adult and YA or Adult Romance. If yours is another genre, feel free to ask - I may be interested, I just can't think what I'm interested in right now! I don't mind a little fantasy or paranormal, but don't tend to read them as a main genre.

Sex, language, drugs etc. don't bother me - the only thing I don't like is horror/gruesome death etc. I tend to critique line-by-line in terms of spelling/grammar/syntax, and give overall views and impressions. PM me if you're interested!

EDIT: Sorry, real life has really piled up and I don't have much time at the minute for beta-ing or even writing. I'll repost when I get some more time. Sorry to anyone I've flaked out on, things have been crazy!

I'm always looking for a good story to beta. I like paranormal, urban/epic fantasy and character driven science fiction. I've been focusing on erotica, but I like to read any rating.

I'd rather not read first drafts or first novels. I think I'm fair, but as I tend to concentrate on the conflict, tension and over all pacing of the story, I will point out what doesn't work for me and why.

I'd love to find someone who can take a critical critique and still a) thank me for the hard work involved and b) want to work on the story to make it better.

After much thought, I'd be interested in reading the first 50 pages of any YA fiction writing. Why 50 pages? Well, that's what agents are asking of my work. I think you either make or break your deal there.

I'm currently a graduate student at UNC, but my class load will be less hectic this coming spring. I love to read, even if it's not from blockbuster authors. My background is in Asian American literature and Literary Theory, but I have particular interest in the YA genre. Still, I'm open to any type of writing.

I hope to get the manuscripts back to their authors as soon as possible. I don't want to make any promises, but I return 50 graded student essays in a week. Always. Just shoot me a PM and we can talk.

I'm up to beta something during my holidays. I primarily write YA fiction (of all sorts, really, genre is no problem), so I'd like to read something in that genre as I feel have a lot more experience with it. I'm also a teen myself so I can offer you feedback on when you're sounding unnatural etc.

If you want me to beta for you keep in mind that while I do try to focus in on both positives and negatives I am harsh. I won't tear your work apart, but I'll tell you what's not working in no unclear terms.

I'm a bit weak with picking up on structural flaws, and I'm saying this now so you know it and get someone else to read for that. I can usually see them, but really, if a voice engrosses me I find it easy to get lost in the flow of the story and forget about character arc and plot development.

PM me if you're interested :D

ETA: Currently unavailable, sorry guys.

I'm willing to do some beta work.

I've read about equal amounts of YA, and adult books, so either is fine with me. My favorite genres include fantasy, horror, and romance. The only thing I really don't like, are war stories, so if war is a major part of your story, consider looking elsewhere. Oh, and I'm open to GLBT themes.

I'm a big picture kind of person, but every once in a while I'll see something smaller that I think could be changed.

If you're interested PM me.

Sorry! Too busy to take on any more beta reading at the moment. I'll update again when I'm available.

I'm willing to beta-read novel-length fantasy, paranormal, YA (esp. fantasy), and erotic romance (esp. m/m).

I'd like to know what type of feedback you're looking for, whether a line-by-line critique or more general feedback (e.g. pacing, structure, character development). If you don't tell me what you're looking for, I'll ask before I start reading. If you want a line-by-line, I'd rather just do a couple of chapters to point out repeated problems. I will warn you that I have a tendency (that I'm working on) to rewrite in my voice when I do line-by-line critiques. Overall, I'm not harsh, but I won't tell you it's great if it isn't.

I prefer to read work that's as good as you know how to make it. I'm also open to brainstorming ideas by IM, though it depends on how engaging I find your story whether I'll be much use.

I haven't attempted publication, though I've written four first drafts, some of which I'm currently revising. Offers to reciprocate are appreciated but not necessary.

Please PM if you have any questions :)

I'm partial to YA and general fiction - but I'm familiar with and open to reading other genres. I'll accept both short stories and novels, complete or incomplete, and writers of all levels.

I specialize in giving an overview critique on story, plot, and characters. If you're in the early writing stages, I'm also happy to help brainstorm and organize ideas.

PM if interested. :)

Status: Sorry, not taking on any new projects right now. Feel free to send me a message if you want your stuff looked at in a month or so.

My preferred genre is YA. I prefer paranormal and contemporary. Although I'm not averse to fantasy, if it has lots of description and lots of characters and lots of naming things I've never heard of, I get confused and bored and probably won't read very far, sorry.

I'd prefer that you send me the first few chapters, and then I'll either ask for the rest or give you my thoughts on just those chapters.

If you want a line-by-line critique, I can do that for a couple of chapters, but otherwise I'll give you my thoughts on structure, voice, characters, etc. The big stuff.

I'm honest, but I try to be sensitive about it.

I'm available to beta urban fantasy, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, and YA. I'm pretty detailed, and I usually like to start with the first three chapters to see if you like my style. I'm very critical of character development and dialogue, and I'd rather point things out than be "nice," so if you're faint-of-heart, I might not be the beta reader for you. That said, every comment I make will always be in the vein of being supportive and of a genuine desire to help other writers improve, so please don't hesitate to PM me if you're interested.

I can beta. I'm most familiar with YA, children's, and fantasy (not necessarily together, of course), and while I'm willing to help with others, I've beta read a few different genres and feel like I'm most effective when it's something I'm already familiar with.

I habitually jot down notes as I go and give a big-picture impression at the end. I have been thanked for being brutal when I thought I was just honest, so perhaps nobody too sensitive? Just let me know what you actually want.

PM me if you're interested, of course; I actually really enjoy beta reading.

(Update: I'm currently on hiatus from beta reading, so no more requests right now-- maybe in a few months, though! I'll update.)

I write contemporary romance and YA (fantasy and realistic), so those are the genres I feel most comfortable beta reading. However, I read across genres and will happily beta any genre. I'm a full-time student and I belong to a critique group, so I may not be the quickest getting back to you. However, if you just have a chapter or two you want read, I'll be able to do that fairly quickly. And I'm willing to do a full-length manuscript. I'll just need more time to work on that for you.

Updated 4/6/10: Okay, life has gotten busier than expected. I won't be able to take on full manuscripts any time soon. However, if you have a chapter or two, a query, or a short story you want read, I'll take a look. Just PM me if you're interested in having me do so.

I am willing to beta read semi-polished fiction. I'm fine with pretty much anything content wise. But please no westerns or YA.

I do not do line-by-line analysis. However, I will point out any grammar, spelling, etc errors I notice. I want to focus on style, character development, dialogue, and such. PM me and tell me a little about what you'd like me to beta and I'll tell you if it is up my alley or not.

Tossing my hat into the ring-be warned that I've never beta'd before, but I'm a fairly critical reader. I won't go line-by-line, but I'll pick up on obvious issues with grammar and syntax. Preferred genres are horror, historical fiction, and mystery. YA is fine if it falls into one of the above sub-categories. PM me if interested.

I'll take a shot at this beta-thing. :D

So... I'll take the first 1-3 chapters I guess, and I decide from there. I wont have the fastest reply, because of school and things.

I will ONLY read YA, but no drugs, cursing (It makes me mad.... lol), ect.

No child or animal abuse (stupid to say here, but its true... It makes me sad)

And I think thats it. So basically, no swearing, cursing, drugs, alchohol and all that stuff... I am also not that much into fantasy, but I am editing Vampire storys, so I guess I can handle a few of them..

So, I guess you just PM me. First time betaing, just to let you know...

Hope that made sense *sighs*

Occupied at the moment with a good author and a good book. I'll update when I'm available again.

I specialise in vignettes, short stories and novellas. I prefer the spelling, punctuation and grammar to be sorted before I get it.

My focus is on structure, content, flow and plot. I enjoy assisting the writer in descriptive prose if they need it.

I prefer to work in tandem with the author on Instant messaging. I'm negotiable on time, I do live in Australia, so it does need a little planning.

I don't edit erotica, extreme forms of horror or stories where people are tortured.

Oh, before I sign off - I take time, because you, the author took time to write your story and I respect that.

Lis.

I'm more than willing beta read fantasy, surrealist, historical, horror, mysteries, and some sci-fi, all intended for adults. No vampire angst/paranormal romance, YA, fanfiction, space operas or hard sci-fi. I don't mind a little romance, but if your cheesy I'm lactose intolerant. If you want someone critical, then baby, I'm your girl. I'm not a grammar/spelling editor, but I can keep an eye out.
I have gobs of time on my hands, and I am GLBT friendly.
Also, if you have a good sense of humor, we'll be on track...

ETA: Ya'll, I'm getting a little tired of saying 'sorry I don't like to read *genre I specifically said I don't read*' Please read this post before you message me. I LOVE to beta, but seriously folks. Seriously.

ETA DUEX: I'm totally in a busy place right now (I'm going back to school. Don't drop out of college kids... you'll just end up there again anyway) so I can't beta read for awhile. Sorry to miss out on any sweet stories.
