I don't know if you can grow one, but you can learn to pretend you have one (particularly in public, on forums and blogs, and with every form of communication that has a chance of being overheard by anyone).

Complaining about the pain that goes along with writing is what darling, wonderful long-suffering spouses are for.

I imagine his agent and publisher know where to find him.

At each stage you encounter rejection and sometimes it's from fellow writers. I remember a lukewarm reception by another writer to my debut novel ( she and I did a writers workshop together) "Well it's a good first effort." ouch!
I've had non writer "friends" send me a ten point list of suggestion of how I could have improved my published novel and offered to "help" me with my next one lol!!!
