Yep, easy after a good sleep.

Yes, the second picture is the brewery, and the view down Tottington Court road. If I turn the map upside down, I can cleary see now, and yes, that side street is Great Russell in the first one. I think part of the confusion comes from the alignment of the streets in a different map, and the width conveyed of Great Russell street, which didn't look like an alley.

Thank you again for you help. It has been greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Just because it's right to admit when you may be wrong...

This afternoon my husband looked at these maps, my old maps, and pictures, and read all of our conversation, and guess what. It does appear that Bainbridge is that alley in the fist picture and that the pub is out of site on the left hand side as is Russell street. It also makes sense why both of these streets flooded, the brewery appears to have taken up the entire area between Great Russell st and Bainbridge....lol great stuff this is.

Thank you again.

Home - but for how long?
!!!

I'm finding this fascinating.

Is the source for your maps one already in Resources by Era, cooee and Lyra? Or is it one I could ask you for and then post for us all?

pdr Lyra's maps are here, and I must say they are briiliant and very clear.

Detail: Plan of the Cities of London and Westminster, 1792 – 1799

http://www.oldlondonmaps.com

The map I had been using for 1818 I posted in your request for resources thread a little bit back.

What I find interesting is that when I started to write the opening scene I never had any maps or the pictures, only the reports to go off, and it appears my logic of where she started from and her walk to to the pub was right, and that it was very probably that although this charachter is fictional, she could have been carried all the way from the pup down Great Russell street and past an alley or even ended up in the alley where she lived.

I love that first picture, and although it was a rebuilt brewery, being able to see where it fits on the map, and see a street she may have walked through. It is brilliant.

Thanks for the info about the points system and the welcome. I had no idea what you meant the first time – apart from the fact I was being rewarded for being filled with Victorian trivia :)

The sites I looked at were beside http://www.oldlondonmaps.com were:
British History Online at http://www.british-history.ac.uk/
Dead pubs http://deadpubs.co.uk/

If you haven’t already come across Henry Mayhew yet – you probably have but I’ll post these here for watchers anyway - you may find these useful, especially the first:

Henry Mayhew, A Visit to the Rookery of St Giles
http://web.archive.org/web/20070930061333/http://learning.north.londonmet.ac.uk/history/Mayhew.pdf
Henry Mayhew, London Labour and the London Poor, volume 1
http://etext.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/MayLond.html

Btw, St Giles rookery was no real distance from Seven Dials – which may not be immediately obvious if you don’t know the area. Seven Dials only now really exists as the sundial, which annoyingly has six faces rather than seven. But I’m really digressing now…

Lyra - I hadn't read those documents. I just read the first one, and it is very interesting. It mentions all those streets I have been looking at.

Thanks again.
