Hey Doomie

I queried 6/9, recieved a request for the next 5 chapters about 2 weeks later. Another week and a request for a full. Call came on 7/9.

Someone mentioned it was kind of quick. Well, when a company is starting off I'm sure they're determined to get right down to business. Just hop over to the PublishorPerish thread. Someone wrote it took 3 weeks from query to a full request and no doubt that lucky person will probably get an offer of representation. When someone is interested, they move on it.

Point taken, but the question of distribution still has gone unanswered. Sorry to seem like I'm ragging on you or something because that's not my intent. But you did say they told you they have distribution, so all I'm wanting to know is that if they just said they had it, or if they actually said who distributes their books. Who is their sales team? Do they have an inhouse sales team, or is someone selling on their behalf?

Okay, okay :flag:

Congrats on your accomplishment. Many people never got that far, so it is an accomplishment indeed. And I am one of the many members here that wish you nothing but success - why wouldn't we? Keep us in the loop, in the event that others may want to follow that path.

Anyone have any more experience with these guys? I’m debating sending off a query (not that it would be successful or anything) but I want to know if anyone else has queried/been offered a contract/looked at said contract/had extended conversations with publisher….heck, even if you've been rejected... Anything really.

Bookgirl? Do you have any more information now that you've recieved an offer? are you working wtih an editor? how have you found them?

Thanks,
D

I've been following this thread and wound up querying a couple weeks ago. Bookgirl or anyone else - if there's any new information you could share, I would greatly appreciate it.

I queried on 3/26 with a synopsis and the first chapter. This morning I received a request for the next five chapters from Ms.Paul. I shall keep you posted on how it goes :)

I received a request for the full manuscript from Ms.Paul this morning. She was very intrigued with my first five chapters and looked forward to reading more.

Congratulations! I've spoken to Lands Atlantic authors and they seem quite pleased with their publishing experience. Plus their books are getting some pretty good reviews. So that bodes well, IMO.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Well with all due respect - there appear to only be 2 authors signed with Lands Atlantic and back in 2009, one of those authors was claiming to be a partner in the company.

xXFireSpiritXx - while it seems that there have been some decent blog reviews for the 3 books released so far, if Lands Atlantic offer you a publishing contract there are a number of basic questions that I'd suggest you ask them before signing:

1. What distribution do they have in place? At the moment it seems that books are available through the websites for Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Do they have a distribution deal whereby bookstores actually buy the books and stock the same? I've seen references to author book signings in book stores, but it's not clear to me whether books in those stores came through author efforts or through the efforts of the publisher.

2. What marketing does Lands Atlantic do? With the book reviews for the existing author, I can't tell if copies came from the authors themselves or from the company (ideally, it should be the company).

3. Is Lands Atlantic paying an advance? There's been talk here of a small advance being paid. How small is small? What rights are you giving up in return for it. As some general advice, given that they're a US based publisher, they should not be taking world wide rights to your book and ideally, nor should they be taking electronic or audio rights.

4. How much do you get in royalties and how are royalties calculated? Presuming that royalties come on the cover price, then I'd expect to see something over 8% (assuming you've been paid an advance). If there's no advance, then I'd expect to see royalties being for a higher amount.

Thanks MM. I will definitely be asking those questions. I emailed one author whose book is being released in May and she seems to have had an excellent experience with them. I will be making sure there is distribution as well as the publisher puts forth marketing efforts. I don't believe I should be the one begging for signings and such.

Cool. As an extra question, you could try asking them how many copies they've sold for their existing authors.

Any receınt info on these guys? I heard they were small advnace paying, off-set publisher. Is that true? They have a small stable of authors (2 or 3) and it's been a couple years. I have to admit, I'm not too impressed wtih the cover art, but maybe it looks better up close. I'll have to order a copy of one of their books.

I'd like to *bump* this forward to see if anyone will respond. The publisher? One of their authors? A reader?

Hello...?

I have had several email exchanges with Lisa and right now we are in a holding pattern. She said she enjoyed my manuscript but felt some parts needed rewrites to bring the tone to a more realistic level and she would like to keep it in her "considering" folder.

I let her know I had no issues in rewrites about a month and half ago. Nothing since then. I know they had a book released in May and another coming in August. It would just be nice to know what is up.

Doing a Publisher search on Amazon brings up three books:

(MG) $10.99 256 pp. Rank 37,746
(YA) $10.99 304 pp. Pre-order. Rank 245,510
(YA) $10.99 312 pp. Rank 35,323

The good news: The prices are not out of the ballpark for YA/MG, although paperbacks in those genres usually run a bit less. $7.99 or $8.99 seems more usual. These books do have a higher page count than one generally sees, so that may account for it (the Twilight series books range from $10.99 to $11.99). Also, the sales rankings are much higher than one sees with vanity or subsidy publishers like PA or Tate. Even the pre-order ranking of the one book is an order of magnitude higher than the typical peak sales ranking of books put out by those outfits.

The bad news: The sales rankings, while far out of the league of vanity/subsidy and most self-publishing, are not all that great. Somewhere in the 30,000s works out to around 5 books a week.

Bottom line: this might be a good candidate to watch, with hopes for the future.

Something you all might want to take note of in regards to LAP. They do get their books into libraries. Go to goodreads.com and look up "The Pace," for example, and click on the WorldCat button. It'll pull up a list of libraries that carry that book. Any publisher who can get their books into libraries is doing something right.

What's your involvement with this publisher?

Do you know that it was Lands Atlantic who achieved that or was it the author? Sometimes libraries will take books that have been donated by members of the public and one of the things that some publishers (e.g. PA) encourage is for their authors to buy a copy of their own book and then donate it to a library.

What's your involvement with this publisher?

If you mean business wise, there is no involvement. Wouldn't know the people who run the place if I saw them. It is simply one of several publishers that I have been keeping an eye on for several months for possible submission. In other words, I'm researching them. One of the ways I do that is by checking on the books they have out to see how their sales are, whether they are in libraries, what the pricing is like, etc... I also check their status on P&E every few weeks and I google them frequently.

As for who is getting the books into the libraries, I honestly don't know. If I find out I'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, I will continue to research them along with other publishers of interest.

Happy Writing!

Any recent news on these guys. Their website isn't all that great (understatement). Their covers leave a bit to be desired, but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has signed with, worked with, or knows personally any of the people behind the scene. I can't seem to find out anything about who runs it and what their background is.

I didn't see a thread about these guys. Has anyone used them? Any thoughts on them? looks like they take young adult and middle grade.
