I can't remember the name of this book series I had listened to a long time ago (it was on tape.) I know it is older and set in post apocalyptic times. I don't remember many details other then something to do with traveling through gates to random other gates. Once these survivors traveled through I think they had to find a new gate to go somewhere else.

I know it sounds insanely vague but it was years ago and I can't remember much about it anymore.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

(it was on tap.)
Now there's an interesting new concept... bottled books.

In answer to your actual question: maybe Larry Niven's Ringworld? Except that's not particularly post-apocalyptic.

C.J. Cherryh also did a gate-traveling series, except that was about time travel, rather than planet travel.

Sorry about that. Juggling babies and typing is not easy to do.

I think it's a great idea. Go to the pub and buy a pint of story, drink it down, experience the story somehow, go back for another.

*runs off to somehow bottle the idea*

I have a vague memory of this as well.

Trouble is, I think there are quite a few books that used that idea in one way or another. Philip Jose Farmers World of Tiers series is one, though I doubt that's what you're thinking of.

Isaac I looked at your suggestions but they didn't look familair.

I know I am shooting in the dark here but I have been wanting to read the series and hate that I am drawing such a blank.

Sounds like a acid trip to me Isaac ;)

And yeah Rug it is a pretty common theme. Which is why I have had so much trouble. I know it had to be popular because it was a book on tape that truck drivers could check out at truck stops. It is also pretty old.

It would help if I could remember some detail at all. I am lucky sometimes I remember what day it is though so not much hope there.

I have no clue on the story, but there's a forum where you're likely to get lots of answers, and thus more likely to get the right one. Do you know how to post to USENET? Specifically this would go in rec.arts.sf.written with a subject such as:
YASID: post-apocalyptic series, traveling through random gates
where YASID stands for "Yet Another Story ID." And yes, there are lots of YASID's posted there, I've even posted a few.

If you'd prefer, I can post your original post there and/or link here.

Isaac was right - it's CJ Cherryh's Chronicles of Morgaine - they travelled through gates ( to other planets / times) to stop them being used for nefarious purposes

One of my fave all time books / trilogy's. And the one that made me want to write.

Linky

And the forth book too
