The final quote from him... well, let me repeat it:
"There is nothing inhuman about my fiction," he told one interviewer. "It is just, I think, that I am chasing a different hare around the track."
That, I think, explains a lot. Both about the recurrent themes in his writing -- and also about why he was such a damn fine writer. Wish I could resort to metaphor at the drop of a hat like that!
