This is weird. I just learned that you're not suppose to staple your manuscript together. BUT how then do you send the manuscript? Do you just stack the loose papers on top of each other and squeeze them in an envelope? But if you do this, wouldn't all the papers go scattering about when the agent opens the envelope? And suppose they lose pages!

You must be using a hell of a big stapler! One wrong move and KATHUNK! your thumb is permanently attached to your desk.

Paper clips! But watch out, 92% of all office accidents involve paper clips.

lol! thanks! and I never thought of that, I guess a 300 page pile would be to big for a stapler.

As for three pages, heyyou (like that user name!), don't bother with even a paper clip. Just tuck the flap of the SASE over the top of the ms., and you mail it in a large 8 x11 envelope. The SASE holds the pages together. (Make sure it's a self-sealing SASE with the paper seal still on. You don't want the glue from the flap of the SASE sticking to the query.) Or tuck the SASE around the folded-in-thirds query and 3 pp. and stuff it into a #10 business envelope.

Am I making sense??!! Probably not. ;)

It's cheaper though, and easier for the agent or editor to open if you use one of those large manuscript envelopes that have expandable bottoms and are self-sealing, instead of a box. They can even hold entire manuscripts. And you rubber band the ms. or use a very large binder clip.

If the manuscript is dropped, hopefully you numbered your pages 1 of 275, 2 of 275, 3 of 275 etc..

with your last name and partial title at the top right of every page. like this

nevada/Komodo/2, nevada/Komodo/3 etc. Except for title page (not necessary for short story) which is not numbered or counted as part of the numbering. Title page is just pretty.
