Anyone had any recent contact with either of these publishers? I approached both early this year with a non-fiction proposal and never heard back. Just sent followup letters today.

P&E has no rating on either. Both web sites are nothing but splash pages.

Descant > http://www.descantpub.com/

Atlas Variety (last update was in Jan 05) > http://www.atlasvariety.com/

Thanks in advance.

I submitted to Descant and never heard anything either. A disturbing number of agents and publishers are beginning to respond only if they are interested. They can do whatever they like, I suppose, but I think it's unprofessional.

It's particularly disturbing when you send in three chapts. or 50 pgs, according to the guidelines from the agent's website, and a year later - zilch.
One thing I learned, though, from a couple of decades spent in the NorthEast - the higher in the "professions" you go, the less "professional" behavior and courtesy you see.
This, too, shall not pass.

Well, Atlas now has content...and reveals itself to be a front for Lulu.

Descant Publishing never materialized. Since the only author is listed here as editor, I'll wager it was a self-pub.

Atlas Variety no reply

My 2007 query by snail mail contained synopsis, outline, 50 pages, and SASE for a FANTASY novel. No reply as of 7/09. they have gone to email queries only. Perhaps I got caught in the transition and was fed to Mr. Trash. So much for the courtesy of an SASE.

Site is gone, so we'll belatedly join Duotrope and declare 'em DEAD.

Yeup. As you might have guessed, I'm doing my semi-biannual bulk check of publishers. Twenty-nine (29) closures so far*, and I've just reached the "D"s.

*To be fair, a few were noted dead previously, but I'd overlooked graying them out.

Hell, just the name Atlas makes me think of the ACME products the road runner always got. That and the LLC with is a limited liability corporation sent shivers through my spine...

29 deceased publishers and you are only in the D's so far? You want me to brew some stronger coffee? Maybe with a shot of Amarillo or Baileys?

Heh, that does sound good. And maybe popcorn to go with re-reading some classic flamewarsouts. :D
