I'm going to have to go see if anyone has already reserved a William Haskins user name, now. I'm going to be terribly disappointed in you lot if no one has.

Someone is twittering as John Scalzi's Ego. Scalzi says he doesn't know who it is.

I'm not sure why I think that's so funny, except....well...it's really, really funny.

Freshly tweeted: William Haskins is mad, bad, and dangerous to know, baby.
Warren G. Harding looks like that eagle from the Muppets who does the news. And—I’m just going to come out and say it—I find that eagle very attractive.

I'm hoping William will join the tweeting craze so I can read what things he will come up with.

I enjoy Twitter because it's allowed me to find new people to hang out with locally, as well as chat with elsewhere.

William Haskins does not grieve for pleasures past, nor perils gathering near.

If I twittered, I think it would be quotes from Stripes. That or quotes from Hobbes. Frankly, I don't see a real interest...

I did not realize how utterly dull some of my friends were until Twitter. Much discussion of peanut butter sandwiches and what kind of peanut butter they enjoy. And they go on with this all afternoon, loling their heads off over peanut butter.

Dear Lord, somebody just shoot me, k?

a masturbatory collection of diaries of the mundane.
    Thank you!

The amusing or interesting tweets are a great addition to the day, I must say "Real" conversations are also possible, but many folks get kinda brain-dead, methinks. These are the ones twittering over the steering wheel that they got a good parking spot.

Yeah, whatever happened to 'real" conversations? I fear social skills will die, as well as the ability to write well.

I think this position is an overreaction. It's not going to cause the death of social skills and "real" conversation any more than CB radios did. Its use is entirely optional. It's a simple form of entertainment and connection. It doesn't replace anything. Proclamations about all the social ills it will create are as silly and short sighted as declaring Pringles are going to result in the death of good nutrition.

I use Twitter. I still have real life friends, close family relationships and deep conversations both online and in person. I still write novels, read long books and make a good living writing and editing in a corporate setting. I still pay attention to whatever it is I'm doing, whether I tweet about it or not. And no, I don't tweet about standing in line at the grocery store, or use Twitter at any point where cell phone usage would be a rude indulgence.

I don't follow the tweets of anyone who bores or annoys me. Likewise, I would expect anyone who didn't care for my tweets to remove me from their "follow" list.

Twitter isn't anything to get het up about. If you don't like, don't use it. The judgments and assumptions about those of us who Twitter are ugly and unnecessary.

Typing has led to the degradation of elegance in the written word. It should be abolished as well.

    Plato on Writing

If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks. What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only its semblance, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much, while for the most part they know nothing, and as men filled, not with wisdom, but with the conceit of wisdom, they will be a burden to their fellows.
