There seem to be too many, but which can I leave out?

Because, at that moment, spoken words, for Nicholas, would have been impossible.

Robj's reconstruction illustrates a major reason for commaitis: mis-ordered clauses. The suggested correction demonstrates one of the best ways to cure it.

But now you have a sentence fragment. I'd just leave off the because.

Yes--I like the RichardB's first example. The fragment issue can be adjusted. Too many commas can make a sentence cumbersome, even when they are used correctly.
