Question Youthful Wisdom Press / A Female's Wisdom, LLC

Does anyone have any experience with this press for "aspiring teen writers"? That it charges $25 for young authors to submit to its contest waves a red flag.

I mentor a couple of young writers. I'm sure they'll eventually find the YW site, and I'd like to be forewarned. Any info?

I don't like their emphasis on being a "traditional publisher" in their FAQs, given who coined that term. They also appear to have no distribution and rely almost solely on the author to do the marketing:

We send out press releases, send you on a virtual book tour, submit your book to book awards, place your cover on book-related sites, etc. However, we expect you to do your part. As the author, no one knows your book–and talk it up–better than you.

I wonder if they're relying on proud mom, dad, and various assorted relatives to be the main buyers.

I hope she's planning to get parents' permission before signing these kids.

The FAQs do explicitly state that a parent has to sign the contract.

they just asked me to let them use my blog post in a weekly newsletter. Am I gonna get my identity stolen or something?

How did they discover your blog? Do they make a habit of citing people's blogs? Exactly what is it that they want to do with your blog? Are they going to reproduce your posts or post a link to it? If they're taking the content of your posts, then are they offering to pay you for the content?

It's up to you, but if they want to use your blog content but are not offering to pay for it, then I wouldn't bother letting them.

As for having your identity stolen, I shouldn't have thought this would be a risk (unless your blog is written under your real name and includes detailed personal information that could be used for identity theft).

In response to luvs2write44 - No, you're not getting your identity stolen by letting them reprint your blog post. It's a way for your work to be seen by a select group of subscribers. If anything, it would draw more readers to your blog.

In response to Momento Mori - they discovered his blog through my blog. I've known the owner of YWP for nearly 10 yrs and she regularly reads my blog. And sometimes she visits the sites listed in my blogroll. She happened to vist his blog and liked what she read. Simple as that.

Do you know if they pay for the reprint rights?

    Pay for reprint rights

Momento Mori - at the moment, no. But that could always change. It's a new company and she's still in the "beta stages" with certain aspects. But from what I've seen, payment for reprint rights isn't required. I've seen it both ways: payment or reprint just as long as the article is used in its entirety and you give credit. Maybe even let the author know when it will be used. I've also noticed that some places where teens can submit their stories, there's no compensation. It's just about gaining experience and exposure.
