Marian Roach's book, The Roots of Desire, is about red-heads. It's funny and gives historical perspectives, but I don't recall specific examples for your time period. It was a book I loaned out and it never came home (like so many over the years).
As a note of interest, to all red-heads at AW Smithsonian Magazine Feb 2009 has a one page tribute to red-heads predicted to be extinct by 2150. Titled-Requiem for the Red-head. Can be found by Google-Smithsonian archive.
