It's simple vanity publishing, but it seems particularly aimed, and maybe, depending, might not be that bad of a deal, if that's truly what your looking for.
If you look at the web site that they have, (
http://www.jacksonpublishing.com/pages/5/index.htm) it's not for aspiring authors, really. This is more of a "I'm gonna make a family history, or tell a life story that only my close friends and family will want to read but I'll need it in book form" type of thing.
The question really is how good is the transcription service, as they want you to send tapes, not your manuscript.
If you're making a family history, you're not going to be concerned with profit, so $13 a book isn't half bad, again, depending on transcritpion and book quality, although you are only allowed to get 100 at a time. And that's IF you get those 100 copies as part of your price. 6 weeks turn around time, though, wouldn't give me confidence.
I don't see it as a scam per se, but I haven't seen any of the actual books themselves. I would say that would determine the scam or not.
