so, they're legit?
If they charge a fee, it's a bad sign.

Also, if you didn't ask them for the e-mail, and they sent it anyway, that's a bad sign. It puts them in the same company as those crummy companies that keep sending me messages about Cialis and Rolexes.

Hmmm, what's that sound I hear? Could it be? Yes, it must be the sound of Hollywood agents stampeding over to Jackson Publishing! I must move before they trample me. ;)

But first I think I'll take a nap. Wake me in a decade. The stampede ought to be close enough by then that I'll actually have to worry.

What more do you need to know than is in the previous posts?

Their angle is that they are trying to sell you their worthless critiquing services.

Tossing personal thoughts around is one thing, but it would be useful to know if anyone has actually had positive feedback from the company. Or a negative experience. Or knows of anyone who has. Even legit agencies call for screenplays at times, and some actually charge a fee. And spec script sights invite agents etc to contact the writer, do they not?

The question you should be asking isn't "Are they bad enough to cross off my list?" The question should be "Are they good enough to put on my list?"

So, are they?

What scripts have they sold? To whom? Were they produced?

I don't know. You can ask them. They should be happy to answer.

They specialized in Black media and briefly published both the Hollywood Weekly and The Fox Hills Digest. Looks to be defunct.

Jackson Publishing Company

In 2005, Prather Jackson of the Jackson Publishing Company in LA, the socalled editor of the 'Hollywood Weekly' magazine, offered a very dubious 'agency service' for screenwriters at a price. Seems he's no longer interested in duping screenwriters but has switched to offering aspiring authors a book publishing deal called 'YOU TALK, WE WRITE' at a greatly inflated price!

It's simple vanity publishing, but it seems particularly aimed, and maybe, depending, might not be that bad of a deal, if that's truly what your looking for.

If you look at the web site that they have, (http://www.jacksonpublishing.com/pages/5/index.htm) it's not for aspiring authors, really. This is more of a "I'm gonna make a family history, or tell a life story that only my close friends and family will want to read but I'll need it in book form" type of thing.

The question really is how good is the transcription service, as they want you to send tapes, not your manuscript.

If you're making a family history, you're not going to be concerned with profit, so $13 a book isn't half bad, again, depending on transcritpion and book quality, although you are only allowed to get 100 at a time. And that's IF you get those 100 copies as part of your price. 6 weeks turn around time, though, wouldn't give me confidence.

I don't see it as a scam per se, but I haven't seen any of the actual books themselves. I would say that would determine the scam or not.

Wow. Just last week their site was only available through Google cache. I guess they're gearing up for another run.
