Home - but for how long?
Now I'm home for a while I've come across many new (to me in the last 8 years when I've been in Asia) library books which look at something specific like Coal or Sugar and discuss its importance through history and what it did for people's lives.

They are useful and of general interest to historical novelists.

Do any of you have or have read any such book and could recommend it for a special 'Social History' section in Resources by Era?

Please recommend them in this thread and I will post them in Resources.

I can't answer your specific question but nearly the same is a TV series presented by Tony Robinson (? surname) of Blackadder fame. His shows took a dreadful job and explained its historical context - making harp strings out of sheeps gut and the like. Might be interesting. Otherwise I'm sure many trades would have a union with knowledge of books on the history of the industry.

Was that...

the worst job in the world series?

Good idea. The library had one series on DVD and I am still gobsmacked by the water carrying in Edinburgh.

I'm happy to have DVDs as well as books

I enjoyed Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, I also liked Molly Crosby, The American Plague about Yellow Fever.
