I have no idea, but perhaps at about the same time they became popular on most front doors? Maybe you could google the manufacturers to see when that business really took off. Good luck.

My aunt had a 30's style house with a 5"x8" window covered by a decorative iron grill in its paneled door. Maybe tiny peepholes came quite a bit later.

I think that's happened in about the last fifty years. I remember motel/hotel rooms with neither. Puma

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I've seen the sort of opening on the door that you're describing, Diviner, and was thinking that the small peepholes that you see in hotels were probably much later. I don't have any sort of peephole on my hotel room door right now, but just wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing anything. Sounds like he'll continue to open the door a cautious crack. Thanks!
