I am drawing a blank here and wondered if anyone can help me out. I'm trying to come up with some literary thieves that my Victorian characters would be familiar with. Thieves like Jean Valjean and the Artful Dodger come to mind right away, but they're a little small-time for my purposes. I'm trying to think of someone a little more flamboyant, someone involved in a big heist or series of heists. I thought of Raffles, but he's a tad too late and perhaps a little obscure. Any ideas?

Hermes from Greek mythology, too.

Aladdin? Ali Baba & the 40 Thieves?

Oliver Twist also had Fagin and Bill Sykes. Both are much different types of thieves than the Artful Dodger.

Aha - you mean thieves in literature, not thieves of literature.

Rep points all around! I think I'm going to go with Fagin. He's a very recognizable character, one that a modern reader can probably identify from a description. Thank you all for helping me brainstorm!
