rolling over
my eyes open
okay it's only one
I propped the book on it's spine

oh shit it's two
I have a limit of sleep
my threshold is at three am
then I roll and roll

a weak blue light
must be dawn or is it hell
wearily I pull myself off the bed
my tender feet trudging to the bathroom

incandescent yellow light
smarts at my eyes
daydreams are not what they seem
I must be at work soon

all day I push myself
my smile drooping
so aware of the growing moon
eating at my healthy self

come on, you foolish moon
shine on me soon
I am ready for a good night's sleep
within your waning

I see you
peeking
in my window
following me
with your eyes
round-cheeked
pale-faced
man in the moon.

Are you spying
on my nakedness
gathering up my
deepest secrets
planning to tell all
to the stars
when safely hidden
behind the sun?

come on,
you bastard moon,
close your eyes
and hum me
into sleep.
your light,
it keeps me gnawing
at the insides of self
in ways I'd like
not to gnaw.
come on,
you bastard moon,
close your eyes
and hum me
through the night.
