I am a member of Nittany Valley Writers' Network, and I write the monthly newsletter. Our group frequently receives info and releases on new upstarts--agents, but mostly publishers. Some quickly reveal themselves as organizations or companies we would not wish to encourage our members to contact.

I have just received a notice on a new publisher and I can't get any info on them (no doubt, because they are very very new.) I'm hoping some of the AW posters have feedback here. In its entirety, here is the email I received:

Hello Nittany Valley Writers' Network,
My name is Bob Griffin. I have just started a small publishing company
that will be publishing fantasy, science fiction and horror stories. Listed
below is my company's first press release. If anybody in your organization
is interested in submitting their works of fiction please visit us at

Thank you for your time,

PRESS RELEASE
OCTOBER 31, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

New Hampshire Authors Launch Publishing Company.
Rochester, NH - New Hampshire authors Rick DeCost and Bob Griffin are proud
to announce the launch of their publishing company and its online presence.
Absent Willow Publishing LLC is an independent book publisher that will
provide its readers with high quality stories of horror, fantasy and
science fiction. Its online efforts include The Absent Willow Review. The
Absent Willow Review plans to publish fictional stories in the horror,
fantasy, and science fiction genre while allowing its readers access to the
magazine anywhere in the world. Additionally, the Absent Willow Review will
publish paperback anthologies from their collected works. "We¹re huge
fans of the genres we publish," remarked Griffin. "We started this
company to find greats works of fiction and to locate the next generation
of great writers." With its online magazine spotlighting new works and
its print publications soon to be available through Amazon.com and other
retailers, the Company is planning to renew interest in short works of
fiction. "For new and established authors of short fiction in the horror
or fantasy vein, the market is light," DeCost added. "We are hoping to
change that." Absent Willow Publishing LLC is located in Rochester,

Some here may also see bells and whistles that I don't see. Any info or feedback or advice you may have is greatly appreciated. I am going to wait until the February newsletter to decide whether to include this in our announcements. Please let me know. ;)

Looks nice enough. No pay except for the Editor's Choice "prize", but if the editing's good, it could grow into something worth submitting to.

-Neither one appears to have any publishing experience. Never a good sign.

-I'd like to know what Independant book publisher means. I'm not sure if legit businesses use it, but it sounds a little odd.

-They seem (though it might just be me) that they're trying to subtly play that old angle of tons of great works not being published.

So far, from what I see I wouldn't advertise this company just yet. Especially not with the obvious lack of experience so far. They may turn out to be one of those few who do right, but best to wait and see.

MRJ, an independent publisher is one not owned by a media conglomerate. It's a common term occasionally overused by folks wanting to make themselves out as stickin' it to The Man, but it's not in itself anything to be concerned about.

rofl. Yes, it's a 'zine. We're aware of that. They also call themselves an independent book publisher that will be publishing anthologies. Just trying to find out if anyone knows if they're legit before I include their link in our newsletter.

Apart from any other issues, it's risky to hook up with a small publisher before it has shown some staying power. Small publishers start up and go bust at an alarming rate. I'd suggest holding off for a year or so, and seeing if they last long enough to actually publish anything. This would also make it possible to evaluate important issues like quality and marketing.

They've survived their first year (yay!) and still look nice. Anyone do business with them?

Bummer. Just got an email saying the mag is closing down. October 16th will be the last release, but every story they've ever accepted will be up on the site until 12/1/11.

Too bad.
