Israel is drawing up plans to attack Iran's nuclear facilities and is prepared to launch a strike without backing from the U.S., an Israeli newspaper reported Thursday.

It would be difficult, but not impossible, to launch a strike against Iran without permission from the U.S., as the American Air Force controls the Iraqi airspace Israel's jets would have to enter on a bombing mission.

"There are a wide range of risks one takes when embarking on such an operation," a senior Israeli official told the Post.

Once again, Israel has the opportunity and the interest in kicking some ass without everyones blessing, or so it seems.

Last time out it was a great disappointment so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

To see Israel unrestrained would be a thing of great beauty.

AW. A very nice place!
an attack like this is a possiblity as Israel is very set against Iran acquiring nukes.
The US was too, for a time, when Iran was declared an axis of evil.

Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom.

Bush, 2002 / State of the Union Address

Not sure where the country stands on the issue at present.

Decades ago, an Israeli leader, perhaps Golda Meir, stated that Israel would never become another Czechoslovakia -- 1938, Munich Conference, and all that. In 1938, military experts believed the Czechs were better prepared defensively than the Germans offensively, and Hitler's General Staff feared a loss if they attacked.

Actually, Sharon said something similar when he was pm. It really irritated to Bush, by the way.:)
As to the op -- I haven't seen anything on this in our newspapers lately, but there were more than a few speculative pieces about a possible strike during summer

Israel may not get the official U.S. blessing, and there may even be a public condemnation if Israel does attack, but behind the scenes, there will be celebrations if Israel can somehow take out Iran's nuclear capablities.

"Mr. President,(either Bush or obama) Israel just attacked Iran's nuclear facilities!"

"Did they get 'em?"

"Early intelligence is indicating that Iran's nuclear capabilities have been destroyed."

"Good."

"What should we say?"

"Release a statement saying 'The government of the United States strongly condemns the attack today carried out by the Israelis.'"

"Okay...."

"But.....good. Very very good."

"Yes it is, Mr. President."

THE END

Just out of curiosity, since when does Israel need our blessing to do anything?
While techically we don't, it has been very rare when Israel did a major operation without US knowing it in advance. One such instance was the bombing of the Iraqi reactor. In this case, things are even more complicated since US has troops in the area which might be affected by the operation and especially by the aftermath. Although it may happen, most of the world wouldn't believe US wasn't in on the operation anyway.

It does seem likely that, given the current attack aviation assets owned by Israel, the US would have to grant overfly rights through Iraqi airspace. And maybe even tanker support.

This is more a message to America than Iran. If Israel were serious about going it alone, they wouldn't be constantly leaking the threat. They do this with an eye to America to make sure ya'll are still in their corner.

I don't think that's ever been in question, but Israel's interest in this is pretty clear cut: Iran's Supreme Leader and his puppy-dog of a president, Ahmagonnagocrazy, have made it pretty clear that they want Israel wiped out. True to character, Israel isn't going to take any chances, though the possibility of them wiping out Iran's nuclear program by themselves is a little farfetched.

All they need is a dozen Tomahawks. If the attack was made from submarines, Israelis could shrug their shoulders and say, it wasn't us.

Actually, the Iranians have dispersed the program pretty widely thoughout the country, so one strike isn't likely to be a silver bullet. It would take a systematic effort over several days to cripple the program, though even that might not be enough. Iranians are not Arabs; they're smart and resourceful, and they have some insight into how these kinds of attacks work.

Otherwise, we would have read about the Israelis (or the US) squaring them away a long time ago.

On Monday, Teheran dismissed the possibility of an Israeli strike, saying it didn't take Israel seriously.

"We think that regional and international developments and the complicated situation faced by Israel itself will not allow it to launch military strikes against other countries," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi told reporters in Teheran, according to the Press TV Web site. "Israel makes threats to promote its psychological and media warfare," he said.
