    Should 'martial arts' be capitalized

The title says it all! Should the term 'martial arts' be capitalized, or only the specific names of the martial arts (Karate, Judo, etc.)?

    Thanks!

I don't believe so. Anymore than you would capitalize the name of any other sport, like "baseball" or "golf".

I don't think it needs capitalizing. I also don't think karate and judo need to be capitalized. I have read a few books on judo and I don't believe they capitalize the word.

If you're writing about the specific disciplines for, say, a sports magazine then yes, I'd cap Karate, Judo, etc. If you're writing "karate chop" or "judo throw" or similar for simple action scenes, I wouldn't cap.

My husband teaches martial arts, specifically T'ai Chi. He's got dozens of books and magazines on the subject and in those, T'ai Chi is always capitalized, (but basketball is not.) The term martial arts is not capitalized.
