I'm a former Air Force Radio Operator and veteran Special Agent in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (like NCIS but more awesome). My areas of expertise are/were: Criminal Investigations, Homicide, Assault, Rape; Undercover Narcotics , Counter-terrorism Operations and Force Protection (broad topic). I speak Japanese (not so good), and Portuguese (very good). I've lived in Italy, Japan, Guam, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Angola, and Thailand. I'm now working in Brazil.

Storygirl, I teach to inmates as well! Nice to see you! I also teach to at-risk teens.

I have a B.A. in literature with a minor in religious studies (focused down to mythic studies, including the monomyth, Jung, Freud, alchemical individuation).

I worked for a Tarot line for 3 years (and even subbed for the sex line a few times--some interesting stories there).

Been reading Tarot for over 30 years.

I know a bit about past lives, reincarnation, near death experiences, UFOs, ghosts, exorcisms, etc.

I have an M.Ed. in adult ed (focused mostly on literacy and narrative learning).

I wrote for an RPG company for three years, so I know lots about that.

Work on a research project that is studying video games and how they help with learning transfer and memory retention.

I was a music whiz when I was younger (age 8 through 18). Played on the stage of Carnegie Hall when I was 17. I know a bit about symphonic music, orchestras and such.

I have a family member who grew pot, so I can always tap into that.

I also did a smattering of drugs when I was younger (teens mostly), so I have some experience there.

I worked at Casa Bonita. Does that count for anything? LOL

Love reading these. This is a cool thread. I'm glad someone resurrected it.

I've lived all over Colorado, if anyone needs info there.

Wow, so many different areas of expertise!

Mine:

Homeschooling. From the perspective of the kid and the parent both. How it's changed over the last three decades. Legal stuff, the lifestyle, challenges faced.

Guns. You'll find better gun experts out there than me. What I am good at is being a mid-level gun person. I can tell you when you're using vocabulary that would bug me, what it's like to learn to shoot, some of the legal stuff.

Modern railroads

Computer science grad school experience (probably can extrapolate to other sciencey grad school stuff)

Siblings with special needs

Also, I'm not sure if this could be helpful, but I have no sense of smell. So if you want to know what that's like, or how that would effect a character in everyday life, feel free to PM me.

I can help with the following:

Artistic knowledge - I've been a professional artist my whole life (since 1991) and have worked in comic books, animation, film/TV, video games, illustration, etc. I can answer questions about those industries, as well as the process of creating art such as composition, lighting/values, color theory, figure drawing (not the same thing as medical anatomy), drawing/painting techniques, stylization, idealization, as well as the tools that artists use.

Computer graphics - You can't work in high-tech entertainment industry as an art director without knowing a lot about computer graphics (3D production pipeline).

Video game development/Animation production - Related to the above, I've worked in the video game and animation industry at the high level as a studio art director, and am intimate with the game development and animation production process.

Audio/Music production - I've also been a musician/composer for as long as I've been an artist. You can ask me about music production techniques like recording, mixing, mastering, sound design, music production software, synthesizer programming, MIDI; playing techniques for guitar, bass, drums; and stuff about composition/arrangement. Studio gear-related questions I can answer too, such as studio monitors, high-end headphones, audio interfaces, etc.

Chinese culture/language - Well, I'm Chinese and my Chinese is as good as my English. I spent 11 years in Taiwan, about 8 years in China, so I'm familiar with life in those countries.

Oh, and I grew up in the Bay Area, California.

I forgot about this thread. I can help with contemporary life in East Africa (EVERYONE has a cell phone--no fooling, everyone--even if they don't have electricity) and what the Peace Corps is like today.

I am currently working on an organic farm, so I can help with that.

Hi:

I'm an nurse. I can offer information regarding the hospice, ICU/critical care, operating room (more limited), PACU/Recovery room, general nursing/medical stuff.

- 23 year old daughter who's a 2nd grade teacher
- 20 year old daughter majoring in biochemistry (she's surpassing my medical knowledge already!) - she hopes to be a brain surgeon but I won't be able to tap that knowledge for years yet, although she should be in medical school in a year or two if all goes well and I'll update this post at that time for those who might want that information.
- 16-yr-old son with ADD and panic disorder, which has been a challenge, to say the least. Although he's not especially traumatized, so I can't go down that road. He's actually a pretty happy/go lucky kid. But he frequently speaks of issues he sees in school, so that might be helpful.
- I'm married to an electrician if anyone wants to tap that knowledge PM me; he now does computer program/troubleshooting of HVAC systems, so I can ask him stuff about that as well
- I live in Maine, US, so am available regarding lifestyles in rural New England.
- I grew up milking cows on my parent's dairy farm, if that's helpful.

I'm a professional stage actress with over 25 years in the business - Broadway, national tours, regional theatre. I've workshopped a lot of new shows so I'm familiar with how a play gets produced. I teach musical theatre audition technique. I also co-founded and was managing director for a major U.S. regional theatre so I know what running a theatre company entails.

I've been a professional puppeteer (marionette, rod, hand & rod and regular old hand puppets) and ran my own puppetry troupe for a while, which included building puppets, training puppeteers, writing scripts and directing.

I lived in Hawaii (Oahu) for four years and went to college there. I've driven cross-country twice and have visited just about every state in the U.S., including Alaska. I'm an Army brat whose father served two tours in Vietnam. I'm a pretty good birdwatcher, a fair organic vegetable gardener and know a bit about wine and tea.

This thread is a fantastic resource :)

My areas of expertise are, admittedly, limited.

I can tell you both the medical background and what it's like to:
-Have inattentive ADD
- be hyperlexic/have NvLD/ high-functioning autism
- be dysthymic and have recurrent major depressive episodes
- be anemic from bleeding
- have acrophobia
- be bullied in grade school
-sleep hallucinate. Everyone does it, only a few both remember it and know what it was.

I think my most useful area of knowledge would be what it's actually like to be autistic and have ADD. It's different than what most people believe it to be like.

I think I may have published in this thread some time ago, but I can't remember, so here's my list of specialist subjects again for those who may find it useful.

Personal experience of:

Childhood onset Anorexia (prior to age 10)
The process of recovery from chronic (20+ years) Anorexia Nervosa, including dealing with permanent physical damage
Heroin addiction and street prostitution (specifically from an Australian point of view)
Experiences with other drugs, such as hallucinogenics and ecstasy
Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features
Self Harm
OCD tendencies (not severe enough to be diagnosed)

I'm a very open person, so please feel free to contact me with any queries or questions you might have. I am more than happy to help if I can. :)

I am a medieval historian. Specialties include the Crusades, late Middle Ages, and the Reformation. I'm mostly a teaching historian, so my research has never gone to the level of a monograph (except for my dissertation, which was on guilds).

I've also been teaching online for many, many years. I suppose here I can call this marketing rather than bragging (!), but mine was the first Western Civ course on the Web, the first Renaissance course, and the first upper division course save for one graduate seminar that beat me to the punch by one semester back in 1994 or so. Anyway, I have a great deal of information available and open to the public. It's organized for my students, but anyone is welcome to read. Here are some links.

Western Civ
The Crusades
Late Middle Ages
The Reformation
Reformation Magazine
