"The Man Who Couldn't Cry"
(c) Johnny Cash

There once was a man and he couldn't cry
He hadn't cried for years and for years
Napalmed babies and the movie love story
For instance, could not produce tears
As a child he had cried as all children will
Then at some point his tear ducts ran dry
He grew to be a man, the feces hit the fan
Things got bad, but he couldn't cry

His dog was run over, his wife up and left him
And after that he got sacked from his job
Lost his arm in the war, was laughed at by a whore
Ah, but sill not a sniffle or sob

His novel was refused, his movie was panned
And his big Broadway show was a flop

He got sent off to jail; you guessed it, no bail
Oh, but still not a dribble or drop

In jail he was beaten, bullied and buggered
And made to make license plates
Water and bread was all he was fed
But not once did a tear stain his face

Doctors were called in, scientists, too
Theologians were last and practically least

They all agreed sure enough; this was sure no cream puff
But in fact an insensitive beast

He was removed from jail and placed in a place
For the insensitive and the insane
He played lots of chess and made lots of friends
And he wept every time it would rain

Once it rained forty days and it rained forty nights
And he cried and he cried and he cried and he cried

On the forty-first day, he passed away
He just dehydrated and died

Well, he went up to heaven, located his dog
Not only that, but he rejoined his arm
Down below, all the critics, they took it all back
Cancer robbed the whore of her charm

His ex-wife died of stretch marks, his ex-employer went broke
The theologians were finally found out

Right down to the ground, that old jail house burned down
The earth suffered perpetual drought

To our Canadian members:

Here's a good song from a Canadian Band - Blue Rodeo
also has guitar tabs if you wanna play it :Guitar: I love this song!

HASN'T HIT ME YET (CAPO 1) BLUE RODEO

INTRO: D/D/Em/C x2
G D
You say that you're leaving
Em C
Well that comes as no suprise
G D
Still I kinda got this feelin
Em C-Bm-A
Of being left behind
This aint nothin new to me
Well it's just like goin home
It's kinda like those sunsets
That leave you feelin
So stoned
Em G D A
Hey Hey I guess it hasn't hit me yet
Em G
I fell thru this crack
D A
And I kinda lost my head
Em G
I stand transfixed
D A
Before this street light
Em G D -A D/D/Em/C x2
Watching the snow fall on this cold December night
Never thought this could happen
But somehow the feeling's gone
You got sick of the patterns
And I got lost in this song
CHORUS, SOLO (verse chord progression)
CHORUS, then:
Em G D A....
And out in the middle of Lake Ontario
Em G
The same snow is falling
Em G
On the deep silent water
Em G
The great dark wonders
G D A
Into the waves of my heart
G D A
Into the waves of my heart
D/D/Em/C, D/D/Em/C-Bm-A
of my heart

Voodoo - Godsmack

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I wanna be here again,
And I don't remember why I came.
Candles raise my desire,
Why I'm so far away.
No more meaning to my life,
No more reason to stay.
Freezing, feeling,
Breathe in, breathe in...
I'm coming back again...
[repeat chorus]
Hazing clouds rain on my head,
Empty thoughts fill my ears.
Find my shade by the moonlight,
Why my thoughts aren't so clear.
Demons dreaming,
Breathe in, breathe in...
I'm coming back again...
[repeat chorus 4 times]
Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
[repeat]
[So far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...
I'm not the one who's so far away...

They Can't Take That Away From Me

Ella and Louis

There are many many crazy things
That will keep me loving you
And with your permission
May I list a few

The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No they can't take that away from me

We may never never meet again, on that bumpy road to love
But I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No they can't take that away from me

This is the last song I listened to on my car CD player on Tuesday. I had it on repeat. I can't explain why, it moves me to tears. I think it's probably because I can identify not with the specific scenarios presented, but with the general attitude and feelings the song portrays.

THE FRESHMEN - THE VERVE PIPE

When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now i'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We try to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me
I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me
I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen
We were only freshmen

I've had Death Cab for Cutie's Transatlanticism playing almost constantly for the last few days. Here's the song that just ended:

"We Looked Like Giants"

God bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime
Remembering when you were mine
In a still suburban town

When every thursday i'd break those mountain passes
And you'd skip your early classes
And we'd learn how our bodies worked.

God damn the black night with all it's foul temptation
I become what i always hated
When i was with you then

We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact
Fumbling to make contact
As the others slept inside

And together there
In a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass from every pane of weathered glass
And i held you closer than anyone would ever get

Do you remember the JAMC?
And reading aloud from magazines
I don't know about you but i swear on my name they could smell it on me
I've never been too good with secrets.
No...

And together there
In a shroud of frost and mountain air
Began to pass through every pane of weathered glass
And i held you closer...

I love Death Cab. Have you listened to Postal Service? They have the same front man, but the 2 or 3 guys that make up the band have never been in the studio together. They send their cuts through the mail and edit them together, thus the name.

I can't seem to get this next song out of my head, so I finally bought the cd. Good stuff.

Howie Day, Collide

The dawn is breaking
A light shining through
You're barely waking
And I'm tangled up in you
Yeah

I'm open, you're closed
Where I follow, you'll go
I worry I won't see your face
Light up again

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills my mind
I somehow find
You and I collide

I'm quiet you know
You make a frist impression
I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the stars refuse to shine
Out of the back you fall in time
I somehow find
You and I collide

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to ryhme
Out of the doubt that fills your mind
You finally find
You and I collide

You finally find
You and I collide
You finally find
You and I collide

wise up - aimee mann

It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though,
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

You're sure
There's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think
One drink
Will shrink you 'til you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just...give up

Cemetery Gates (The Smiths)

A dreaded sunny day
so I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side

A dreaded sunny day
so I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
while Wilde is on mine

So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
all those people all those lives
where are they now?
with the loves and hates
and passions just like mine
they were born
and then they lived and then they died
seems so unfair
and I want to cry

You say: "ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn"
and you claim these words as your own
but I've read well, and I've heard them said
a hundred times, maybe less, maybe more

If you must write prose and poems
the words you use should be your own
don't plagiarise or take "on loan"
there's always someone, somewhere
with a big nose, who knows
and who trips you up and laughs
when you fall
who'll trip you up and laugh
when you fall

You say: "ere long done do does did"
words which could only be your own
and then you then produce the text
from whence was ripped some dizzy whore, 1804

A dreaded sunny day
so let's go where we're happy
and I meet you at the cemetery gates
Oh Keats and Yeats are on your side

A dreaded sunny day
so let's go where we're wanted
and I meet you at the cemetery gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
but you lose because Wilde is on mine

Great song, William. I love The Smiths. I've got another Buffett song on.

This song sums up my mood lately:

Pacing the Cage
Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it's pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you've lived too long
The days drip slowly on the page
And you catch yourself
Pacing the cage

I've proved who I am so many times,
The magnetic strip's worn thin
And each time I was someone else
And everyone was taken in.
Powers chatter in high places
Stir up eddies in the dust of rage
Set me to pacing the cage.

I never knew what you all wanted
So I gave you everything.
All that I could pillage
All the spells that I could sing
It's as if the thing were written
In the constitution of the age
Sooner or later you'll wind up
Pacing the cage

Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can't see what's round the bend.
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend.
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land,
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage...

The Smiths - "Pretty Girls Make Graves"

Upon the sand, upon the bay
"There is a quick and easy way" you say
Before you illustrate
I'd rather state :
"I'm not the man you think I am
I'm not the man you think I am"

And Sorrow's native son
He will not smile for anyone

And Pretty Girls Make Graves
Oh ...

End of the pier, end of the bay
You tug my arm, and say : "Give in to lust,
Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll
Soon be dust ... "

Oh, I'm not the man you think I am
I'm not the man you think I am

And Sorrow's native son
He will not rise for anyone

And Pretty Girls Make Graves
Oh really ?
Oh ...

I could have been wild and I could have
Been free
But Nature played this trick on me

She wants it Now
And she will not wait
But she's too rough
And I'm too delicate

Then, on the sand
Another man, he takes her hand
A smile lights up her stupid face
(and well, it would)

I lost my faith in Womanhood
I lost my faith in Womanhood
I lost my faith ...
Oh ...

Hand in glove ...
The sun shines out of our behinds ...
Oh ...

Radiohead - "Street Spirit"

Rows of houses all bearing down on me
I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things in all positions
All these things will one day take control
And fade out again and fade out

This machine will will not communicate these thoughts
And the strain I am under
Be a world child form a circle before we all go under
And fade out again and fade out again

Cracked eggs dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death can see it’s beady eyes
All these things into frution
All these things we’ll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out again.

Dah (dah-diddle-diddle dah dah dah-dah) Dah!

Um, it's Jean-Luc Ponty and his electric violin doing eclectic jazz (but usually mis-shelved in New Age)--I didn't know what to do, with no lyrics, but the last track's been in my head for several pleasant hours.

The Doors -- "Peace Frog"

There's blood in the streets, it's up to my ankles
She came
Blood in the streets, it's up to my knee
She came
Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago
She came
Blood on the rise, it's following me
Think about the break of day

She came and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair

She came
Blood in the streets runs a river of sadness
She came
Blood in the streets it's up to my thigh
She came
Yeah the river runs red down the legs of a city
She came
The women are crying red rivers of weepin'

She came into town and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair

Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind

Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven
Blood stains the roofs and the palm trees of Venice
Blood in my love in the terrible summer
Bloody red sun of Phantastic L.A.

Blood screams her brain as they chop off her fingers
Blood will be born in the birth of a nation
Blood is the rose of mysterious union

There's blood in the streets, it's up to my ankles
Blood in the streets, it's up to my knee
Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago
Blood on the rise, it's following me

The Who - "Boris The Spider"

Look, he’s crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he’s up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Now he’s dropped on to the floor
Heading for the bedroom door
Maybe he’s as scared as me
Where’s he gone now, I can’t see

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

There he is wrapped in a ball
Doesn’t seem to move at all
Perhaps he’s dead, I’ll just make sure
Pick this book up off the floor

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

He’s come to a sticky end
Don’t think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl ’round
He’s embedded in the ground

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Wow, I just heard one I'd had on my MP player that popped up that I hadn't heard in a long while:

Beck - Lost Cause

Your sorry eyes, they cut to the bone.
They make it hard to leave you alone.
Leave you here wearin your wounds
Waving your guns at somebody new.

Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost cause.

There's too many people you used to know
They see you coming they see you go.
They know your secrets and you know theirs
This town is crazy, but nobody cares.

Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost cause.

I'm tired of fighting
I'm tired of fighting
Fighting for a lost cause

There's a place where you are going
You ain't never been before
There's no one laughing at your back now
No one standing at your door
Is that what you thought love was for?

Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost
Baby you're a lost cause

I'm tired of fighting
I'm tired of fighting
Fighting for a lost cause.

Just finished listening to Criminal by Fiona Apple:

I've been a bad bad girl
I've been careless
With a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and
I want to
Suffer for my sins
I've come to you
'Cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don't know
Where I can begin
What I need is
A good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against
Because he's all
I ever knew of love

Heaven help me
For the way I am
Save me from
These evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings
The consequence at hand
But I keep livin' this day like
The next will never come

Oh help me but
Don't tell me to deny it
I've got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies till
I'm good enough for him
I've got a lot to lose
And I'm bettin' high
So I'm beggin' you
Before it ends
Just tell me where to begin

What I need
Is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against
Because he's all
I ever knew of love

Let me know the way
Before there's hell to pay
Give me room to lay
The law and let me go
I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know

What I need
Is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against
Because he's all
I ever knew of love

What I need is
A good defense
'Cause I'm feelin'
Like a criminal
And I need
To be redeemed
To the one
I've sinned against

Because he's all
I ever knew of love

One of my absolute favorite songs... The Storm ~ Blackmore's Night

A timeless and forgotten place,
The moon and sun in endless chase
Each in quiet surrender
As the other reigns the sky…
The midnight hour begins to laugh
A summer evening's epitaph,
The winds are getting crazy
As the storm begins to rise…
Wild were the winds that came
In the thunder and the rain
Nothing ever could contain
The rising of the storm…

In the wings of ebony
Darkened waves fill the trees
Wild winds of warning
Echo through the air…

Follow the storm I've got to get out of here…
Follow the storm as you take to the sky…
Follow the storm now it's all so crystal clear,
Follow the storm as the storm begins to rise…
She seems to come from everywhere
Welcome to the dragons lair
Fingers running through your hair
She asks you out to play…

In all of nature's sorcery
The most bewitching entity
Hell can have no fury
Like the rising of the storm…

Led Zeppelin -- Your Time Is Gonna Come

Lyin' cheatin' hurtin that's all you seem to do.
Messin' around with everyone in town
Puttin' me down.....
Always the same playin' your game
Drive me insane, trouble is gonna come to you
One of these days and it won't be long
This is all I gotta say to you:

Your Time Is Gonna Come
Your Time Is Gonna Come
Your Time Is Gonna Come
Your Time Is Gonna Come

Made up my mind to break you this time,
Won't be so fine, it's my turn to....
Do want you want, I won't take the brunt.
It's fadin' away, can't feel you anymore.
Don't care what you say 'cause I'm goin' away to stay,
Gonna make you pay for that great big hole in my heart.
People talkin' all around,
Watch out, no longer
Is the joke gonna be on my heart.
You been bad to me...,
But it's coming back home to you.

Your Time is Gonna Come 4x

Hey Celeste! That was drgnlvr's favorite.

Here's one of mine, and I don't mean to be morbid, but it reminds me of my son. Vincent, by Don McLean

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze, and winter chills
And colors on the snow linen land

What you tried
To say to me
And how you suffered for
Your sanity

And how you tried to set them free
They could not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
I coulda told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one

As beautiful as you

The acoustic guitar is phenominal! And it builds, like a storm. I also get the impression of gypsies dancing around a bonfire.

I can't explain it. It has to be experienced, and enjoyed -LOUD-
