I won a query submission from Vickie Motter back in February, sent it on the 26th... sent a follow-up note (with re-submission, per her blog) eight weeks later (this Monday)...

At what point to you put down the silence as a "no"?

I checked QueryTracker, and it looks like she sends quick requests but slower rejections. She's requested a few manuscripts this last week from queries sent this last week, but the last rejections she sent were in mid-March, and those were to queries sent in mid-February.

I think she does reject, eventually, but at this point, you can probably infer what her response will be. That said, did the query submission you won include a promise of feedback or a quick turnaround? If that's the case, perhaps you're getting caught in her spam filter...

Good luck with this and other queries (and all your requests)!

Lblankenship, you submitted a full manuscript, right? If so, two months is certainly not an automatic "no." I usually wait a good three months before even nudging.
If you think there is a possibility your manuscript got caught in the spam filter, go ahead and ask via email. It won't hurt.
Given all this stuff about minimum cuts though, I would tread carefully.
In my opinion, that kind of arrangement gives agents less incentive to push for the big six or to hold a manuscript until the market is ready. No matter how little you get, they still get a sizable chunk.

I think she's just been busy lately. I've been waiting on news from her for a month and a half now.

Did you format your manuscript for her e-reader? She has an article on her blog about how she likes manuscripts formatted, it goes beyond the usual 1" margins and such.

Thanks for the responses.

No, it wasn't a full MS, and I foolishly formatted it according to her agency's guidelines not her blog's. The contest gave me a specific subject line to use, but I guess it may have gotten caught in the spam filter.

After reading most of the thread here, I'm not exactly on the edge of my seat. Hiring an editor and self-pubbing is looking more and more viable...

Yep. Vickie Motter is fast. Queried at 2:00pm on Saturday, 9/29.

Request for 100 pages 3 hours later.

Rejected on Sunday, 9/30.

Ouch.

I had Margaret Bail ask for my full manuscript. I'm looking at Query tracker for the submissions times, but it says that's for partials. Submitting the whole manuscript isn't a partial, right? Sorry for the stupid question, I'm really new to agents. :hooray:

No worries. No, a full is not a partial. So, yes, send the full, as requested. No, don't expect the response time to be as fast as for a partial. It might be, but don't expect it. Good luck!

From this thread, it seems like this agency is legit, but I found it unusual that on the website's home page, the first thing they are advertising is that they offer a "full suite of literary services" including Literary Management but also:

Book Development
Internet Marketing for Authors
Classes for Writers
The First Fifty - new service!

Isn't this the conflict of interest that I've read about? Like, it's in their financial interest to tell you that your MS needs some work, because they offer that service for a fee?

It seems that most of the other agency websites I've seen say, We are agents. Period.

Thank God for AW. I saw the "First Fifty" thing and it sounded all kinds of fishy. "Shoemaker, stick to thy last!" comes to mind here. Be a book doctor or represent authors. Trying to be too much to too many only looks like a grab for money. I used to do copyedits/proofreading (not content or structure, just grammar, spelling, formatting, etc.) on a contract basis, and I stopped taking fiction jobs because I didn't feel right taking more money for editing than the author was likely to make writing. As I said, this just gives me all sorts of bad feelings.

And a minimum commission? That's like me charging the casino to offset my potential losses. This agency will go on my "Do Not Query" list. Too many other agents don't raise these concerns.

Just a quick update: got a form r on a query to K Reed I've lost the sent file for, but I'd already marked her as a no on my Doc., since I believe I sent query with a Feb/March batch, so a two-month wait on it. And the agency site says they often don't reply unless interested. Ah, that's fine, since I've updated the manuscript since.
Very sweet, but ultimately dear author message (though I guess I appreciate the fact that agents rarely sign with 'dear author' any more): "Thanks for thinking of me! I’m afraid this project isn’t a fit for what I am currently looking for, but I wish you the best of luck in finding a perfect home for it."

Queried NA Fantasy Romance

Don't know about the commission thing. It wasn't obvious when I went on their site, and they are not plugging it after the rejections, so might have stopped now.

Has anyone signed with Katie Reed of Andrew Hurst?

Katie has requested a full of my manuscript. I know she's a recent agent, but does anyone know of her signing history or her success rate once she does agree to represent something?

No personal experience, but according to Publishers Marketplace, she has one sale for a non-fiction health book so far.

Thanks. She's only had mnscrpt for two days so I'm probably jumping the gun here, but want to know what to expect or if I should keep looking

From Publishers Lunch today:

Andrea Hurst at Andrea Hurst & Associates is retiring from the agency division of her business after 13 years. The agency "will retain a few of their bestselling authors, including Dr. Bernie Siegel, but will no longer be accepting queries or new clients." Hurst will continue her work as a developmental editor and consultant while pursuing her own work as a novelist.

Samantha, I queried Genevieve Nine at Andrea Hurst five months ago and never heard anything back. Could be, of course, that she only responds to queries that interest her.

Queried Genevieve Nine with YA Post-Apocalyptic on 10/18/14. Auto-reply confirmation received. No response so I assume no.

The agency NO LONGER accepts query letters or new clients except by referral, however, we actively scout self-published authors with strong sales and high visibility.
Primary focus is paid services, including $500 submission coaching.
