I have been querying agents that rep in the two genres I want to write in but I am finding some agents that only rep in one of the two that I would like to query.

Should I get the one agent in one genre and then either try to talk them into repping the other genre later, find a second agent in the other genre at the same time or get an agent and have them refer me to another agent for the other genre later or just keep limiting my search to an agent that reps both?

Can I ask a probably stupid question...

Have you written the manuscripts yet? (I might just be having a dumb-comprehension day, but the wording here leaves me questioning...)

Sorry. Under the weather today so its probably me not writing clearly.

One manuscript is complete and I have been querying it. The other manuscript in the second genre is about halfway finished.

So I am wondering if I should only query agents who rep both genres for now until I run out of agents who rep both?

Then, if I don't find one, just query an agent that reps the genre I have a finished manuscript for and worry about the second genre later?

Do this. Just focus on getting a good agent for your finished manuscript for now.

I was going to agree with your idea of looking for an agent who reps both genres first, but honestly I don't think that part's necessary.

Also, hope you feel better soon. :)

Personally, I think it's a good idea to target agents who rep both (or all genres). OR target agents who rep the genre you're querying who work at a larger agency where other agents rep your other genre.

Hope that made sense.

Blessings,

Focus on getting an agent for the complete manuscript.
If you get one then they will help you with representation for the second one - either they'll rep it themselves, involve a colleague in their agency or they'll know someone in another agency.

That was what I was wondering, if an agent repped me in one genre but wouldn't in another would there be an avenue available to get representation in the second genre without it getting complicated.

If your agent absolutely cannot rep a novel, then they'd likely refer you to someone else within the agency who could.

Just wanted to chime in and agree. I'm a YA & MG specialist but if my clients wanted to write picture books, adult NF, whatever, I'd rep it if it was good, and use my agency's contacts/knowledge of the genre in order to succeed. Many agents will simply expand to keep their clients within their wheelhouse.

Doesn't mean I want to open to queries on those subjects, however.
