I didn't see a mention of this publisher elsewhere. I found the link for Treepress.net on Writersnet. They seem to be a new pod not vanity press, but only have erotica titles by one author so far. There paperback technology comes through Lulu, so how long before the author has to put up some of that bill?

Any details or experiences with this one? There site seems to be a temporary one with lots of pop ups too.

The one author is the owner. And if you follow the links to her own author site, you'll be amazed. She's barely literate and planning to run a publishing company.

The point of sale is lulu--so treepress is not a publisher per. se. In order to go with them you would need to think thye were 'adding vlaue' to luluing by yourself and keeping all the profit. Using lulu means that your roylties will be lulu royalities *minus* what treepress takes.

At the moment this is a free-hosted website. I would hold back until they have at least a professional website, great cover art and the ability to sell direct from their own site and some evidence of a loyal readership.

They seem to be looking for many genres not just erotic romance--this worries me as I think a small company will have more chance of getting readers if they specialise.

Every link I clicked on that site popped up a misleading registry scanner ad. I had to dismiss the box before I could follow the link. This alone made me run away.

Wow, I'd love to see some of these books complete with 'author imput'. Those submitting in foreign languages must be breathing a sigh of relief - they get to do all their own editing.

Seriously, you're going to market yourself as a publisher, claim you have a team of editors ... you would at least run a spell check. I do worry about some people.

TreePress Publishing

They offered me a contract last month - but I began asking too many questions, ie, cost of the book to consumers (and me) distribution plan... The harder I pressed - the more defensive they became. The smell of a true scam is evasiveness. Another red flag is illogical or defensive dialogue. I demanded a ball park price based on word count. I was told that based on 4*** pages - the price would be about $15.00. I responded that my previous book with AuthorHouse based on a 12 point font gave me an average of 292 words per page (allowing for new chapters to begin on the top of the page, etc.) By my calculation - the page count was more like 380. Her response - 'Maybe you should just stay with AuthorHouse."

This is book #2 for me. The first was self published and I learned a lot of what I don't want on this go round. I dont want my book priced so far out of sight that I have no hope of offering it at a responable price. (Come on - I'm not Stephen King - no one in thier right mind would pay $15 or $20 bucks for an unknown, except maybe my mother)

I don't want my distribution plan to consist of every dot com in the book world. Not too many people buy online. Spare me the useless press releases - I think they are used for TP.

If I have to settle for a smaller enterprise - then call and duck a duck - but do it up front and with a plan I can live with.

I'm shuffling contracts again (currently 5). The first were Publish America, The Chris Robins Agency and TreePree. I am counting on the feedback from you veterans and using the force to decide what to do next. The above is what I already know not to do.

Thanks to everyone for the new age of accountability. The world as a whole gets away with a lot less in the twenty-first century.

Straightshooter, if you haven't tried submitting to commercial publishing houses and literary agents with good sales, that's where I'd start. Shoot for publishers who have similar books to yours on bookshop shelves.

And YAY! for avoiding PA and Chris Robins .
