"Politics is applesauce."

William Haskins

he also said:

"the best thing about this group of candidates is that only one of them can win."

i like plato better, however:

"those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber."

Yep. And, "If Stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?"

Them bones them bones gonna rise again
so dignified and so wise again,
Gonna tax us up to our eyes again. . . .
When they gets up off of their thigh bones. . . . .

The political and commercial morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet.
always a favorite of mine.

"Politics is applesauce."

Remember that he also never met a man he didn't like.

I think the entire quote was, "I never met a man I didn't like... it was after I got to know the SOB that I discovered I didn't like him."

No, actually the entire quotation is this:

“When I die my epitaph or whatever you call those signs on gravestones is going to read ‘I joked about every prominent man of my time but I never met a man I didn’t like.’ I’m so proud of that I can hardly wait to die so it can be carved. And when you come around my grave you’ll probably find me sitting there proudly reading it.”

Most people know very little about humorist Will Rogers today but in his time he was a very popular celebrity and he was also, by all accounts a modest and decent man who meant what he said, including that he never met a man he didn't like. He was also a movie star, cowboy, and writer.

More about the man can be found here:

http://www.willrogers.com/

Will and his wife are buried there on what was going to be their home site and his stone is inscribed, as he wished, with the phrase "I never met a man I didn't like."

Cicero had the best idea:

"Politicians aren't born, they're excreted."

People of today who know little about him, are missing a lot.

That's very true; by all accounts, Will was a pretty cool kind of guy. At the Will Rogers site in Claremore, OKlahoma, visitors can watch his movies, hear him speaking, and view an amazing collection of personal items (as well as visit his grave).

It's no wonder that his death was mourned by millions.
