he catches himself before he finishes the sentence.
interestingly enough, cnn's transcript (http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0803/28/sitroom.02.html) neglects to mention the "gaffe":
DOBBS: We’ve got to be able to talk about it and I can guarantee you this, not a single one of these [the word “cotton” should appear here] — just ridiculous politicians should be the moderator on the issue of race. We have to have a far better discussion than that.
outside of this freudian slip, i'm getting really tired of seeing privileged white people like dobbs say that race doesnt matter and people should stop bringing it up.

Lou Dobbs is the only TV "newsperson" around who can rival Bill O' for oozing smugness and pomposity. In both their cases, it gets their mouths into trouble from time to time. And regards:

I concur. It's amazing how easily these privileged types confuse the word "doesn't" with "shouldn't". I guess it's real easy, when you belong to the long-dominant and privileged race/ethnic group, etc.

It's a shame he can't find the time to focus on more serious issues that haven't received enough coverage on his program. Like, oh, I don't know, illegal immigrants for example?

Bravo, I take it you are not from the south.
There is nothing racist in the term 'every cotton pickin' one'. It simply means 'every single one'.
When cotton is ready to be picked, it's all hands into the fields because, if it rains, the crop is lost.
Sure, blacks did pick cotton, but lots of folks picked cotton, not just blacks.
You're seeing a racist reference which doesn't exist. The term is still in wide use in the south, and I have used it myself many, many times.
How's it racist when I tell my son, when he's gathering his toys, to 'get every cotton-pickin' one of them off the floor or they go in the trash'?

Now y'all wait one cotton pickin' minute. One can get in trouble also using the bridge term "in spades" for emphasis from the quick to call you racist crowd. And never use "niggardly" among strangers who will hear it/misinterpret it as the "N" word.

I'm no fan of his, but calling it a sign of hidden racism is ridiculous.
I would like to know the derivation of the phrase, though.

I have never watched his show. But, if this is the case, it was pretty sharp of him. He avoided (for the most part) a god awful shitstorm.
Just ask that woman sportscaster. Her off the cuff remark on "lynching Tiger Woods" was, in essence, meant as a complement. Her meaning was that the field stood no chance so long as Tiger was still alive. Perhaps over exaggerated, yes, but the problem came with the word 'lynch'. Cost her a nicely paid job and her entire future in broadcasting.
(Note: I meant no offense by using the term 'broadcasting' in reference to a female sports reporter.)
Everyone is offended by everything these days. Sheesh.

In the cutest possible way, Joe. Honest.
Yeah, seems Bravo has fallen prey to the "finding racism where none exists" crowd (I say that as a Southerner who knows better than to find racism in the term "cotton-pickin'."). I suppose next time I say I'm gonna do something in "two shakes (of a dog's/lamb's tail)" that someone, somewhere will be offended by it, too.
I did find this interesting link.
Apparently, it's all Bugs Bunny's fault...

"two shakes (of a dog's/lamb's tail)"
Only two shakes are allowed in the men's room, otherwise it's something else.

All true; my husband's family (white) is from Louisiana and they have all picked cotton at one time or another.
We even let our kids pick a few bolls once just so they could have the experience of picking cotton by hand (it's prickly, by the way)

For heaven sakes, Joe, it's not about "everyone being offended". It's about making comments that are racist. "Lynching" has such negative connotations because it was a form of terrorism that was used against blacks back in the day. That comment was way out of line for that sportscaster to use. I, for one, am happy to know that she lost her job over it. Maybe teach her a thing or two for next time.
And couple that with Lou Dobb's own issues with people who are not white, I would like to see something happen to him, too. It's one thing to be against illegal immigration; it's another to use race-baiting as a tool to turn Hispanics into scapegoats for all of society's ills. Because of idiot pundits like him, hate crimes against Hispanics have increased (mostly directed at the ones that are here legally, mind you).
And of course, this most recent flap seems to show he doesn't like African-Americans much, either.

That expression is a perfect example of cross-species-objectification, not to mention voice appropriation.
Dogs and lambs reading this thread must be seething.
