Anybody here into punk?
And im not talking about any of the new "pop" stuff. (i.e. green day, good charlotte)
Im talking about real good old stuff like:
black flag
dead kennedys
bad brains
the misfits
the germs

Lordy, yes. Don't forget the Circle Jerks, the Minutemen, X, Red Cross (original spelling), Minor Threat, Richard Hell, The Contortions, and D.O.A. (sigh)
I expect KTC, doloreshaze, PattiTheWicked, and some others to be along any minute now. I would mention which of those groups I've seen live, but KTC will trump me twenty-eight-point-seven times over. He's a god.
Soon as I can trust my two-year-old (say, in about twenty years), I'm getting out the record player again and working out a way to transcribe my vinyl over to the iPod. It'll take months of listening to the old records. It'll be wonderful.

yeah, there arent a lot of people who listen to punk anymore (especially in my generation)
but its still there
lately Ive been getting into some of the old english stuff like X-ray-spex, the adverts, the damned, and sham 69.
I saw the circle Jerks live, and theyre still pretty good. Even though they all got old, theyre still preforming. (Keith Morris stepped on my hand that day, funny)

Ohh I love punk
Dead Kennedy's ( I have a lasting image of a reverse pyjama party, and a load of hairy arsed bikers dressed in baby doll nighties dancing to 'To Drunk to...')
Buzzcocks
The Pistols
The Clash
Soiuxie and the Banshees ( or were they more goth, I can never tell)
Stiff Little Fingers
Boomtown Rats
The Jam
The Damned
I could go on....
I'm going to have to go and put some on now.
999
PIL
Ramones
New York Dolls
Patti Smith
Nina Hagen (because I love her, baby)
I could go on all day.

A few more...
The Adicts
Cockney Rejects
Dead Boys
The Business
Cock Sparrer
G.B.H.
More often than not I listen to ska (usually old stuff & some 2-tone) and reggae, but my itunes is heavy on the punk.

What? Nobody mentions the Vibrators? The single longest running punk rock band ever?
And I'd put some of the early stuff by The Stranglers as punk or quasi-punk.

Soiuxie and the Banshees ( or were they more goth, I can never tell)
Siouxsie used to be one the of Sex Pistols' hangers on, and her early band was a punk band. Sid Vicious played drums at her first show. But she claims she never embraced that label. Her first few albums do sound punk, but most of her music is probably not.
Yes, Celia...the Bromley Contingent. Her and Billy Idol.
I liked the Forgotten Rebels too. "I don't like the stains on your panty hose, but baby I love it when you f*** me dead."
http://www.thebansheesandothercreatures.co.uk/prerecord6.jpg Siouxsie is in the middle with the big tie and eyes.

It's always a big argument in my house. Which is better - American punk (hubby) vs. Brit punk (me). Man, we've been bickering over this for ten plus years now. Who do you think wins?
Answer below:
We always agree that Irish punk band Stiff Little Fingers is the best - so we're both wrong.
The best part of this ongoing argument is that we have to drag out all our vinyl to try and convince each other.
Sounds like a great argument to have, dolores. (-;
I've always been of the belief that Marc Bolen brought a little bit of granddaddyism to punk. I know T-Rex was glitter...but there was always just something about him that screamed punk to me. He cared less about how his music fit into everything else. His lyrics were always so out there. I do think brit punk was better than american. Actually hands down. I loved the next wave to come from the punk scene too. bauhaus and joy division and the like. lyrics and dark dance stuff.
I saw Siouxsie in concert twice. I can't remember where the first time was...it was very early 80s in a small small venue. Might have been the old masonic temple place on Yonge in Toronto..The Concert Hall. I know I saw The Cure there and Nina Hagen and a pre Do-You-Really-Want-to-Hurt-Me Culture Club band that was mostly raggae/punk at the time (circa 82ish?). I think Siouxsie too???
I saw her again in, I think 86, at Canada's Wonderland....good concert but paled compared to the first one.

Thats such a classic argument.
I love them both pretty much equally.
And any excuse is a good one to drag out the vinyl

Hell, me and my brother are in a punk band. I listen to a lot of punk. I am a huge fan of hardcore punk such as:
Black Flag
Minor Threat
A Global Threat
Cheap Sex
Circle Jerks
Rat City Riot
Leftover Crack
ect.

The old stuff is really the best.
Thats why I wish I was born earlier, so I could have seen more of my favorite bands in concert.
I was born a generation to late.

I wasn't too into live punk - too aggressive, too much gobbing. I didn't mind the bruises, but coming home with my hair crusty from spittle was just too disgusting. Best show I ever went to was The Pogues back in '85. I guess I've really got a thing for Irish punk.

I do love The Specials and "Ghost Town" IS one of the best. I also love Madness (beyond "Our House", that is...). But I have to admit, my prefs lean toward the old school traditional groups like The Heptones, Desmond Dekker, Derrick Morgan, etc. And I love the new neo-trad groups like The Slackers, Westbound Train, and The Moon Invaders.

I had one of the music channels on cable a couple weeks ago, and they played a Circle Jerks song. After it was over, my husband/boyfriend/lover/signifcant other/roommate/whatever looked at me and asked, "Some people call that music?" I immediately squelched the snark by replying "I liked it." Which I did.

yeah, people have been bashing on punk for years.
Escpecially Tipper Gore, thats why I hate both her and Al.
BY THE WAY:
John Mccain supported a bill that would have made any album without the PMRC explicit warning sticker illegal.
which pretty much means all punk rock.
so dont support censorship, and dont support mccain
(a little off topic, but I started this thread, so I may doom it if I wish)

I am going to say it now. I will not state my political views, but I will say the PM(S)RC is a complete and udder joke. Those people have been ruining music for years. Their demands are absolutely ridiculous. They have five big demands (which I can't remember) But I do remember they were out of the question. The FCC and the PMRC is a violation against the right of free speech where I live. It is disgusting to know something like it exists.

It's not punk if it doesn't upset someone. Is it not censored. They simply paste a meaningless sticker on the case of the CD that reads something to the effect of: "Warning: Contains lyrics that might make your mother cry."
And this useless act makes all of them feel better about how they've protected the children.

Not to mention, this applies only to CDs distributed in big stores (unless the rules have changed in the last ten years or so), which punk labels don't do anyway.

I can't really listen to much punk anymore because its utter failure is too depressing to think about.

Yes! I saw them live about 15 years ago. We were packed into a small room at the back of a closed down restaurant. It was awesome!
I don't think anyone mentioned the Vandals yet so I will. Some girls where I work were sooo surprised when I told them that Gwen Stefani was not the first one to sing "Oi to the World!"

It is so hard to be into Punk rock and to hear the infamous, dreaded words "They call that music" or a variation of the phrase.
I got onto the worst trouble with my father when I was thirteen after he found out I'd spent all of $15 on an imported Ramones album (It's Alive, for you fans out there.) Yeah, I was grounded and got the silent treatment for weeks - after he finally stopped yelling at me. ("It wouldn't be so bad if you were listening to actual music, but you waste my hard-earned money on that pathetic crap...")
I never got the chance to see several of my favorite bands of all time live, but I did get to see the Ramones in late '87, right after Marky rejoined the band. Man, did they ever kick some serious butt. Of course, it also kicked some serious butt when my hearing finally came back about three days later....
