Roy Scheider (http://movies.nytimes.com/person/63580/Roy-Scheider?inline=nyt-per), a stage actor with a background in the classics who became one of the leading figures in the American film renaissance of the 1970s, died on Sunday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark. He was 75 and lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Mr. Scheider had suffered from multiple myeloma for several years, and died of complications from a staph infection, his wife, Brenda Seimer, said.

Mr. Scheider’s rangy figure, gaunt face and emotional openness made him particularly appealing in everyman roles, most famously as the agonized police chief of “Jaws,” (http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/25912/Jaws/overview) Steven Spielberg (http://movies.nytimes.com/person/112325/Steven-Spielberg?inline=nyt-per)’s 1975 breakthrough hit, about a New England resort town haunted by the knowledge that a killer shark is preying on the local beaches.

I'm a little stunned here. Roy remains a favorite actor of mine. He had such depth to his characters. He will be sorely missed, but always remembered for his contributions to the arts.

Marathon Man is one of my fav. movies. A classic. He was a great actor. Someone you didn't think about until you watched one of his movies and then you think, "I forgot how good he was".

Jaws the first film I ever remember seeing as a kid - can't have been more than four or five - and whatever's been going on, good or bad, that film, and Chief Martin Brody, have been an inspiration, an escape and a touchstone for pure cinematic joy ever since.

A true talent that I will miss very, very much.

Rest in peace, Roy.

One of Scheider's best films is little known, for some unfathomable reason. It's Sorcerer, made in the mid 1970s, and is a really good remake of a classic French noir film from the 1950s titled The Wages of Fear. It's a taut, atmospheric thriller, and I'd recommend it to everybody.

I've got to see this now. I saw the original, but didn't get around to this.

I'm imagining that when Scheider got to heaven, G-d saw him and said, "Smile, you sonovabitch."

Jaws = Favorite Movie. Seeing it for the first time was a defining moment for me. Roy Scheider provided a performance that served as the everyman center, the anchor, among all of the colorful characters and events. He made it real.

I also enjoyed him in lots of other films. Someone mentioned Sorcerer. I've only seen that once, in the theater, and it's like a fever dream to me. I just remember that famous poster of the truck on the bridge and being ridiculously stressed for a couple of hours. I should go see if it's available on DVD.

Dang it, I'm having eye problems this morning and at first glance I thought the thread title was RIP Rob Schneider. This was a particularly nasty bait and switch. Roy was a great actor. Rob .... mmmm not so much.
