I don't know if she's still the MAIN MAIN character, but I guess she sort of is.

She's a baby in her debut scene, and she's wearing....

Brace yourselves for cuteness...

A Cheshire Cat footie pajamas thingy with cat ears and a tail. :D

My main character wears......

A T-SHIRT AND SHORTS

I know. I'm a genius.

Haha, I have no idea.

I assume he's semi-dressed up. Going to his brother's concert.

black cargos, some kind of shirt, and boots. the boots are important.

well, not really. I just wanted him to have some awesome boots...

It's high fantasy, so the usual sexy tunic and leggings combo....

Jeans, t-shirt, black leather jacket.

Depending which beginning I end up going with, either a purple t-shirt and white pants or suit pants, white shirt and blue vest.

Hmm, well, it's mentioned that he puts something in a jacket pocket, so from that we can deduce that he is wearing a jacket. He's written rather scruffily though, so I think anyone reading would get that he was dressed somewhat scruffily too.

Usually I leave it mostly for the reader to imagine. However I decided I wanted Timothy to be wearing a brown corduroy jacket for most of his adventure, thought it was cool. I mentioned it at the beginning and thought that would be enough.

Then I saw the most recent Harry Potter and in the last scene Mr. Potter was dressed exactly as I always had pictured Timothy (yes, with the corduroy jacket and everything). And it looked pretty darn good.

So I went back into my MS and mentioned the jacket throughout the story, to sort of maintain the visual. You know. Just . . .cause.

One of my MCs is wearing a bliaut, one is wearing a tunic/leggings combo, one is wearing a cobbled-together set of street-urchin leathers, and one is wearing a very pretty cotehardie.

High fantasy, did I mention? :)

He's a teenage boy, so jeans and a shirt.

She's wearing a patched green dress with the lace ripped off and worn out leather boots. But it gets ruined 5 pages in when someone bleeds all over it, and her attire changes considerably after that.

Also high fantasy. :)

I've yet to mention what my MC is wearing. His clothing hasn't been important, so I leave it up to the reader's imagination.

nothing. His other personality is wearing shorts and a tropical shirt.

Overpriced (for all the clothes) khaki shorts, a green polo, leather flip-flops, shaggy hair, tattoos, and a big sign across his forehead that says "COLLEGE"

WIP 1 - Tight jeans, some sort of shirt. Not much detail is given because she begins the story drunk and quickly loses her clothes ;)

WIP 2 - A hideous purple skirt and a white blouse. It was the only thing she could find in a hurry.

WIP 3 - Clothes not mentioned yet (I'm in outline/hook phase), but I know this character likes her leather boots. She's probably wearing them when the story starts.

I don't believe I ever described what my MC was wearing. It's in first person and he just never talks about what he's wearing.

ShebaJones

WIP A: Jeans, tank top, tall boots.

WIP B: Boots, pants, long coat, shirt, vest, hat. All gray. Oh, and a big pair of goggles.

No clue. Baggy jeans or cargos or BDUs, I guess, and probably a t-shirt. She carries a concealed pistol and a sheathed suppressor, so clothes have to be baggy enough to hide them.

I never really say, but at one point (when he's rushing around because of an urgent phone call) he trips over his running shoes and pulls a t-shirt out of a laundry basket.

he must have been shirtless and shoeless.

Think 19th century.

My hero's a Scotland Yard detective, Victorian era, coming off-duty, so he's in a dark linen suit and a bowler hat. One has appearances to uphold, after all.

Clothes, mostly.

Like Stephen King, I don't go in for a wardrobe description so well. I don't remember what he says. "If I want to read a description of clothes, I can always get a J. Crew catalogue. And if I intricately describe my image of the character, then it freezes out yours, and then I lose."

I describe my character's clothing when it's relevant. Johnny's going outside in the cold. How does he dress? Well, it's relevant that he's spending two hours huddled outside under a train car and he's wearing thin pants and bad shoes and is therefore really cold. It's relevant so that the reader knows he isn't wearing thermal underwear and heavy boots and is comfortable.

Book 1, MC is born so she's wearing amniotic fluid, etc.
Book 2, MC is hunting nude so she wouldn't mess up her clothes. She's got scales on her left side.
Book 3, MC is in bed and she sleeps au natural.

Devil's Playground - There is no description of what the MC is wearing in her first appearance. The scene that I'm working on at the moment is missing something. Adding the description of her clothing will bring the scene closer to completion. Thanks for the suggestion.

30 Days to Justice - MC is wearing Prada boots, sunglasses, belt, and purse with clothes she bought at the thift store.

As for my Human main character... When you first see him in my current primary project, he's wearing a royal purple button-up shirt, black trousers, and black cloak

TSAF: the first time it's important enough to mention, she's waking up in bed au natural & can't remember how she got there.

IRT: the same t-shirt & jeans she wore to the concert the night before.

My main character wears......

A T-SHIRT AND SHORTS

I know. I'm a genius. Great minds think alike :)
My character wasn't that genius though, because it's pretty chilly during the night scene in which we meet him and he didn't think to bring something warmer... He's going to regret that big time once he gets locked in the basement of that derelict building....

Ah well, I guess I can't blame the kid, he wasn't exactly in the right state of mind when he packed and he didn't expect to get locked in...

I don't go for clothes description either. You know my mc is wearing jeans because of the gun tucked in them. The leather coat is torn when claws sink into it. And he pulls off the t-shirt because it's soaked and mud covered.

In Evernight, Bianca is wearing a sweater and jeans.

In my patiently waiting WIP, Delilah, Alexandra is wearing a fairly nondescript pair of slacks and a long-sleeved T-shirt.

Both are dressing specifically to be inconspicuous, but for very different reasons.

Fun thread!

The first time my MC appears, his clothing is not described (it is dark, the POV character can't really see the clothes; when the day dawns, the POV character has other things to worry about).

The second time my MC appears in the comfort of his home, and he is wearing a green silk robe.

Now that I have read through the answers to this question, I realize that it's really only half a question.

My answer to what my MC is wearing is "riding apparel" . The "other" question that a few people are addressing is, "I only mention the riding boots in the chapter/scene." If this were a film, my character would be dressed in english riding attire. I don't mention the clothing specifically though, other than the boots.

Savvy?

So, now some of us have to go back and add to our answers.:D

Hmm... I don't often mention clothes. Let's see:

WIP 1, hockey mystery: skates, black pants, referee shirt, helmet
WIP 2, fantasy: hasn't been mentioned yet, presumably pants and shirt
WIP 3, historical:MC1 a somewhat charred plain white robe. MC2 an elaborately-embroidered silk robe
