What is a letter of Inquiry

I think I know what this is, but since you probably only get one chance at sending one I thought I would ask. Does anyone have one they would like to share, so that it can be used as a guideline?

Google "query letter" (in quotation marks) and I imagine you'll find websites that give instruction and examples. The query you'd write to sell a play is not going to be very different from the query for a screenplay or a novel, so check those boards for similar questions. I know I've seen the subject go by on the Novels board here.
