There's a little book meme that's starting to spread, in which bloggers post 13 opening lines and visitors have to try to identify them.

1. "I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and I tell you he's the one. Or at least as close as we're going to get."

...

3. It came by mail, the old-fashioned way, since the Judge was almost eighty and distrusted modern devices.

4. No knowledge has come down of Joseph Knecht's origins.

...

6. The news hit the British High Commission in Nairobi at nine-thirty on a Monday morning.

7. The island of Gont, a single mountain that lifts its peak a mile above the storm-wracked Northeast Sea, is a land famous for wizards.

8. The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it.

...

10. Brother Francis Gerard of Utah might never have discovered the blessed documents, had it not been for the pilgrim with girded loins who appeared during that young novice's Lenten fast in the desert.

11. Here was the least common denominator of nature, the skeleton requirements simply, of land and sky - Saskatchewan prairie.

12. In the tombs of Kursi sits a man with his back to the sea.

13. The cabin-passenger wrote in his diary a parody of Descartes: 'I feel discomfort, therefore I am alive,' then sat pen in hand with no more to record.
If you know any of these, come on over and identify them. I mean, if novel WRITERS can't get them... And feel free to set one up on your blog. Or here. Or wherever.

7. Ursula LeGuin, Wizard of Earthsea.

3. Is this a John Grisham?

10. A Canticle for Liebowitz, and I've never even read it.

I'm pretty sure #3 is Grisham, but which one?

Meh. I'm not sure why I read more than two or three. The guy just doesn't develop character enough for my liking.

Maryn, clueless about the rest

I posted on the blog, but if people are posting here I will too.

#1 is Ender's Game.
#3 is The Summons.

No Googling allowed! Hustle over there and post them in the comments.

And feel entirely free to set up your own. The best I did on anyone else's was two, and even then, someone had beat me to one of them first.

Sheesh, I'm not even recognizing the ones where I've read the novel!

Maryn, forgetful

You've all been right so far. I'm quite certain I'm going to be kicking myself over a few lines when the other bloggers reveal their titles. On the other hand, I am very certain that some of them I have not read at all.

Oh, I'm always easily distracted! Hence why it would be a bad idea for me to blog.

But digging through my bookshelf gives me this.
